Compare Ledger Wallets Nano S Vs Plus: 2023 Crypto Storage & Compatibility Guide

Did you know it's been nearly 7 years since Ledger launched the Nano S hardware wallet?

At the time, it was a revolution - a portable, affordable, secure, and simple device, at a time when there were very few options available.

Now it's been nearly a decade, and Ledger has finally released the Nano S Plus - but is it worth it? What's new? What's better? Is it worth the price?

Get all the answers you want, and probably more information than you need, in this new guide from The Crypto Merchant. They're an authorized dealer for Ledger, so you can trust that they're giving you the straight truth and that any products ordered from them are legitimate, from the manufacturer - and that's important.

Keep reading this blog to get my personal hot take on the Ledger Nano S - but if you're considering purchasing one, I highly suggest reading the full guide at https://www.thecryptomerchant.com/en-ca/blogs/resources/ledger-nano-s-plus-review-2023-pros-cons-comparison

The guide includes information about upgrades and updates included in the Ledger Nano S Plus, and a comparison to the company’s original version, the Ledger Nano S. While there are several minor differences, the most significant improvements in my opinion at least, include enhanced storage space for tokens and apps and a larger screen.

The Ledger Nano S Plus includes 1.5 MB of storage, which the guide explains is nearly 5 times the capacity of the original.

I know that is a ridiculously small amount of space compared to anything else, in fact, it's barely more than a floppy disk from the 1980s. Even though it's unrealistic for any other use though, it allows the wallet to hold tokens in up to 100 different cryptocurrencies at the same time - so it's probably more than enough.

This is because even though the apps require only a tiny amount of storage, each cryptocurrency stored on your device must have its own app installed for authentication. When the original Ledger Nano S wallet was launched in 2016, it provided you with up to 320 KB of storage, which is only enough space to store up to 5 apps, and tokens from 5 different cryptocurrencies.

So far, we can say for sure that if holding a wide variety of currencies is your goal - the Ledger Nano S Plus is a massive upgrade, and maybe even essential. What does it cost to get the upgraded version anyways? I'm glad I pretended you asked, because that information is not included in the guide for some reason.

Maybe it's because prices tend to change, and they didn't want to update it every time. Here's what I can tell you for sure though - it's not much. At the time I'm writing this, there's about a $20 difference between the old, outdated version, and the brand-new, improved one.

It's probably worth it just for the larger screen, which was included to make completing transactions using the device less complicated. Being able to read the details sounds like a pretty important feature when you're talking about financial transactions - and in my opinion, something I wouldn't want to do without.

While there have been some other minor changes, the guide concludes that in most other ways, the wallets are pretty similar.

Complete analysis from The Crypto Merchant shows that the wallets use nearly identical security features, including a CC EAL5+ secure element chip, with an ANSSI certification. Both wallets also allow you to create a 24-word BIP39 encoded recovery seed phrase, that can be used to restore your assets in a lost, stolen, or damaged wallet.

While this may seem like common knowledge to veteran traders, the guide really shines a light on the process, and how it works from start to finish. They also explain how your recovery seed phrases can be used, or generated, an unlimited number of times.

That's crucial information, but maybe not as helpful as they think - since they don't spend much time talking about seed phrase backup vaults.

The guide is packed full of useful, interesting, and relevant information - but let me add my own tip. When you're in the market for a new crypto wallet, bundle it with a recovery seed vault, and fill in your recovery seed at the first opportunity.

Sure, it sounds a bit like overkill to have your recovery seed saved on a fireproof, waterproof set of stainless steel plates that are resistant to corrosion, crushing, and impacts. Do you know what's even worse though?

Not having your recovery seed backed up when you need it.
