Coaxial Cables vs Ethernet Cables: Which One to Use?

Coaxial cables and Ethernet cables are both commonly used for transmitting data and signals, but they have some key differences that make them better suited for different applications. Here are some things to consider when deciding whether to use coaxial or Ethernet cables:

Speed: Ethernet cables are generally faster than coaxial cables, with speeds ranging from 10Mbps to 10Gbps or higher, while coaxial cables typically have a maximum speed of around 1Gbps. If you need high-speed internet or data transfer, Ethernet cables are usually the better choice.

Distance: Coaxial cables can transmit signals over longer distances than Ethernet cables, up to several hundred feet or more, while Ethernet cables are limited to around 100 meters (328 feet). If you need to transmit signals over long distances, coaxial cables may be the better choice.

Interference: Coaxial cables are better at handling interference from external sources, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) or radio frequency interference (RFI), while Ethernet cables may be more susceptible to interference. If you are in an area with a lot of interference, coaxial cables may be a better choice.

Cost: Ethernet cables are generally less expensive than coaxial cables, and are widely available at electronics stores and online retailers. Coaxial cables can be more expensive, especially for high-quality cables that are designed for specific applications.

Compatibility: Ethernet cables are compatible with most modern devices, including computers, routers, and smart home devices, while coaxial cables are more commonly used for cable TV and internet connections. If you need to connect devices to the internet or to each other, Ethernet cables are usually the better choice.
