Clean and Deodorize a Refrigerator

by Samuel Barnes Web Designer

Are you too afraid to open the refrigerator, lest the smell of old vegetables hit your right in the nose? I love to believe in the saying that a clean refrigerator is a happy refrigerator which directly leads to a happy home. A clean fridge preserves the food for a longer period of time and can prevent contamination. Does not it sound great? But quite too often I get busy with tons of other things, and before I even know it, the fridge is already full with forgotten goods which start to smell funny.

How to make a DIY disinfecting fridge cleaner

With time, refrigerators can get dirty and sticky. To our surprise, they can even get a bit stinky due to the stuff we keep in there. I would prefer to use products that disinfect and deodorize but still are not detrimental for my health. I am sure that you would not want to use toxic product, too, when it comes to cleaning the place where you store your food. I would like to take this opportunity and share with you a few tips about how to do a thorough clean of your fridge and deodorize it.

Natural fridge cleaner

You will need: vinegar (1 cup), water (2 cups), dish soap (2 teaspoons), orange essential oil (optional)

Get a bottle and add vinegar to the dish soap. Then, fill almost to the top of the bottle with warm water and make sure to shake well.

How to clean the fridge

  • If there are spills from raw meat and you are wondering how to get rid of them, wipe the spill first. Use hot water to wash the area. You can disinfect the area by simply using hydrogen peroxide (white vinegar works just as well and it is much cheaper). Let the ingredient do its magic for a couple of minutes and then wipe dry.
  • If you are cleaning up stubborn sticky areas, dip a cloth or sponge in the aforementioned solution and squeeze some of it. Let the solution sit for a couple of minutes. When the stain is already loosen, wipe it clean. You can wash the shelves and drawers with warm, soapy water. Make sure they are already dry before putting them back into the refrigerator.
  • Q-tips and toothpicks can become your partner when cleaning hard-to-reach, small areas such as the seal of the fridge.
  • For the exterior of the fridge, you can use the very same solution we already mentioned. The best part is that you can use if for the interior, too. Remove the cover on the bottom and make sure to clean well.
  • DIY Fridge deodorizer

Once you have deep cleaned the refrigerator, gotten rid of any stains, now it is high time for you to make a natural fridge deodorized to avoid future issues.

You will need: baking soda (2 cups), essential oil (20-30 drops, citrus or vanilla), jar or baking soda box

Put baking soda in the container and then stir the essential oil. Place the container anywhere in the refrigerator to absorb bad odors and keep the refrigerator smelling fresh. Every once in a while, stir the baking soda to release more aroma from the essential oils. Make sure to replace the ingredients every 4 months.

Hopefully, you will find these tricks and recipes to be very beneficial. Remember: do not neglect the fridge tenancy cleaning chore as you consume the food you store in there. Make sure to do the cleaning on a regular basis. If you also have some tricks when it comes to fridge cleaning, feel free to share them with us.
