How to Set Up a VPNAlthough Chrome OS is known for its security, you still need to protect your Chromebook's web traffic, which requires the use of a VPN. The issue is that setting up a VPN on a Chromebook isn't as simple as it could be. Our advisor will walk you through the entire procedure.

Is a VPN Required for Your Chromebook?

A VPN, or virtual private network, establishes an encrypted connection between your Chromebook and a VPN server. You may be assured that your internet traffic is not spied on in transit by routing it through that tunnel. Anyone on the same network as you, anyone who has access to that network's router, your ISP, and snoopy intelligence operatives will all be kept in the dark if you use a VPN. This is especially necessary on public Wi-Fi networks, but it's important in any situation.

Your data is no longer encrypted once it reaches the VPN server. Your IP address is disguised since it appears to be coming from the VPN server rather than your computer (or smartphone).

It's also considerably more difficult to link your internet actions to you. Furthermore, if you connect to HTTPS sites, your data is secured every step of the way.

You can also spoof your location by using a VPN.

What is the Best Method for Setting Up a VPN on a Chromebook?

In general, there are three ways to safeguard your Chromebook with a VPN: To use the VPN of your choice, you can use a Chrome browser extension, an Android app, or manually configure the client on Chrome OS. Surprisingly, choosing Android is the best option. As I'll describe, each option has potential negatives ranging from a lack of assistance to a lack of documentation.

VPN extensions for Chrome

The most straightforward way to safeguard your web traffic is to use a Chrome browser extension. Many VPN services offer Chrome extensions, including Editors' Choice winners NordVPN, Private Internet Access, and Tunnel Bear. Simply download one from the Chrome Extensions Webstore, and it will appear next to your Omnibox wherever you are logged into Chrome.

The disadvantage is that Chrome VPN addons only encrypt web browser traffic. VPNs do not ensure protection for web traffic from all apps on your Chromebook. That isn't always a bad thing. If you want to safeguard your web traffic but don't want your VPN to interfere with your video streaming, you can disable the browser and use, for example, an Android app to watch Netflix that isn't routed through the VPN. However, this can lead to a misunderstanding about what is and isn't secure on your device. In general, we recommend that users use a VPN as often as feasible and as widely as possible.

VPN Apps for Android

Using an Android VPN app on your Chromebook is the best approach to secure your web traffic. Running a smartphone app on a laptop may seem absurd, but an increasing number of Chromebooks now support Android apps, giving you access to the whole Google Play store. Simply download and install the VPN program of your choosing, login, and turn it on. Conveniently, Android VPN apps appear as connection options in your Chromebook's network settings menu, which is convenient.

There's some debate about whether Android VPN apps secure all of your Chromebook's online traffic or simply the traffic from other Android apps. Google, on the other hand, has certified that Android VPN apps do indeed secure everything on your Chromebook. That's fantastic news, since setting up a VPN on your Chromebook has never been easier.

Here's how to configure a VPN on a Chromebook.

There are benefits to setting up a Chromebook VPN. Those concerned about security can rest assured that their location will be hidden, their activity will not be logged, and untrustworthy Wi-Fi networks will not be able to track them. Furthermore, users can circumvent geo-restrictions, making it easier to access services that are otherwise unavailable. Continue reading to find out more!

Three simple methods for configuring a Chromebook VPN

There are three methods for configuring a Chromebook VPN. The first and most straightforward method is to use a Chrome extension if your provider provides one. Install it, turn on the service, and you're ready to go.

The second option is to use an Android app, but this is only available on

Chromebooks with Play Store access. Install the app on your Chromebook, configure it as you would a smartphone, and you're done. Because not all VPN apps work flawlessly on Chrome OS, you may encounter a few issues depending on your provider.

Because the third option is a little more involved, we've included detailed instructions in a separate section below.

Configure it using the L2TP protocol.

If your Chromebook VPN provider does not provide a Chrome extension and your Chromebook does not have access to the Play Store, you will have to manually enter all of the necessary information (L2TP protocol). It's simple and doesn't require much technical knowledge, but you must understand where the information goes.
