Choosing a Food Safety Consultant DOs and DON'T

I've been in several plants lately which were overwhelmed with the needs to acquire a GFSI certificate and have chosen to employ a consultant to assist them.  But more frequently than not, it has backfired.  I blame these failures into the next:
The plant not creating a dedication to this program and selecting out it or 
Employing a consultant who isn't really a master in a particular field.
There are lots of reasons a corporation might employ a consultant to help with food security.  The business could be seeking somebody who attracts technical understanding that the present staff will not have, like hiring a microbiological consultant.  It can be looking for someone with particular knowledge of a fresh analysis strategy, including BRC, SQF, or even FSSC 22000. Though the GFSI programs are mostly based on instruction, employing a specialist to compose your programs won't lead to achievement since it's exceedingly improbable that the instruction is accountable for clinics along with the food security group's knowledge.
Among the dimensions of GFSI-benchmarked Tests is whether the programs which are assessed are considered sustainable.  When the programs have been derived from the experience of one individual (consultant or employee), they then can't be termed sustainable.

DO
Use external tools to improve the knowledge base of your staff.
Interview consultants prior to employing them.
Require credentials out of consultants.
Provide staff to work together with the consultant.
Organize for your consultant to provide training.

DON'T
Hire consultants based on cost alone.  Together with consultants, you will probably get exactly what you purchase.
Employ a consultant that promises results.
Rely on the consultant to make programs for you.
Rely on the consultant to represent you through the audit.
