Character-Based SEL Curriculum For Elementary Schools Improves Mental Health

Uncle Iroh, from the beloved TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender, once said, “In the darkest of times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength.”

And while this may be just a line from a kids' show - it is a powerful one because it teaches us the importance of hope and finding hope even when we don't feel particularly hopeful.

And that's exactly what Hope Rising wants: to teach kids to be hopeful in the face of uncertainties and adversities.

Hope Rising, which offers the world’s first Hope-Certified SEL program My Best Me, is helping students develop their identity and character through a mental health and character-based curriculum.

Designed to foster positive and engaging dialog between educators and students, the curriculum allows for open discussion of personal development in a safe environment.

“The My Best Me curriculum contributes to the mental health and well-being of students while enhancing their social and emotional competencies,” explains a Hope Rising representative. “Our unique approach develops the psycho-social skills of students through age and grade-appropriate strategies that will help build adaptive and positive behavior.”

My Best Me curriculum is designed to be taught in one-hour sessions each week. However, due to the flexibility of the program and the non-sequential nature of the lessons, educators can break up the sessions or pair them with other subject matter events.

Grounded in five main concepts - identity, health, community, environment, and economics - Hope Rising’s SEL curriculum covers a range of topics, including emotional intelligence, problem-solving, communication skills, stress management, and conflict resolution. As part of the program, students learn to find their role in society, develop character, stay mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy, and engage in positive interactions with peers, friends, family, and society at large.

Hope Rising believes that having hope can be learned. As such, its My Best Me program teaches hope with the goal of helping students reduce the impacts of stress and build resistance against adverse childhood experiences.

The Hope Rising curriculum has already been implemented in schools throughout California, Washington, Indiana, and others, with positive outcomes for students. The suspension/expulsion rate was reduced by 68%, the drop-out rate was reduced by 81%, and average grades have increased in participating schools.

With a focus on mental health, Hope Rising believes its My Best Me curriculum can help young people overcome trauma, build resilience, and develop character to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

One Oklahoma teacher commented, “Students have more respect for themselves and others because of the bond My Best Me creates.”
