Causes, symptoms and treatment linked to Gangrene

by Austin Wilson Marketing Executive

Gangrene is death of body tissue due to deficiency of blood supply or bacterial infection. It mostly influences the extremities but it can also occur in the internal organs and muscles. If you have diabetes or atherosclerosis there are higher chances of developing it.

Symptoms of Gangrene are as follows :

• Skin color ranges from pale to blue, purple, black, red or bronze depending on the type.

• Severe pain

• A smelling discharge leaking from the sore.

• Low blood pressure

• The influenced tissue is painful and swollen

• Fever

• Feel unwell

• Confusion

• Shortness of breath

• Lightheadedness

• Rapid heart rate

Causes:

It is triggered due to lack of blood supply or infection. Blood provides oxygen and nutrients to feed the cells and immune system components such as antibodies that ward off the infection. But due to deficiency of blood supply cells can't survive and hence the tissue decays. If bacteria remain unchecked for a prolonged period, it forms an infection and induces the tissue to die causing gangrene.

Risk factors:

There are numerous factors that enhance the risk of developing it:

• Age: It occurs most frequently in old people.

• Diabetes: High glucose level doesn't produce enough insulin and damages blood vessels intercepting blood flow to other parts of the body.

• Medication: In very rare cases the anticoagulant drug in combination with heparin therapy causes it.

• Obesity: It compresses the arteries, leading to diminished blood flow and increasing the risk of infection and poor wound curing.

• Blood vessel disease: Compressed arteries can induce lack of blood flow to other parts of the body.

• Severe injury or surgery

Treatment:

Tissues that have been damaged cannot be saved but can be prevented from its processing. The treatments embrace surgery, antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Surgery: The dead tissue is removed which helps to stop it from propagating and admits healthy tissue to cure. Skin graft is a type of reconstructive surgery that may be used to repair the damaged skin. It can be carried out only if an adequate blood supply has been returned back to the damaged skin.

Antibiotics: If they are given through a vein, they may be used to treat it that has become infected.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: This procedure may be used to treat gas gangrene. Due to increased pressure and oxygen content, the blood can carry greater amounts of oxygen. Blood rich in oxygen slackens the growth of bacteria that prosper in the absence of oxygen.
