Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose

by Winnie Jack Artist

Portraits of Sargent are with a delicate stroke and smooth lines. But he no longer followed the traditional patterns, and instead he focused more on the performance of conventional standards, character, expression, and characterization. Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose was a kind of painting on canvas made by Sargent between 1885 and 1886. It measured 174 ×154 kilometer. Now it is collected in Tate Gallery in London.

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose was one of the most famous works of Sargent with the most understanding instant light effect. The painting depicted the garden in the evening twilight where two simple naive little girls lit the lantern under the background of a clump of carnation, lily, rose in full bloom. White dress with pink and pale yellow flowers, flashing lights and flush reflected in the face formed two contrasting and complementary colors, constituting a soft and romantic picture. From this painting, people could easily see a comfortable and tranquil scene from the two little girls. And the flowers such as the carnation, lily, rose added more flavors to the whole picture.

In order to accurately express the hazy sky and the white dress color effect in the lantern shadow and the contrast of flowers, leaves, grass, light, color and other complex shapes, he often put the canvas for outdoor sketch or modification. When every evening came, he robbed the time to seize the instant changes for observation and creation. Hard work pays off. The painting was sent to the Royal Museum of fine arts, enjoying warm recognition.  People commented, “It is so bright dazzling the eyes that all the other paintings were cast into the shade.”
