In a few years, it has undergone a remarkable transformation, from being an island of fishermen surrounded by virgin jungle and unknown beaches, today it is, together with Acapulco, the most recognized Mexican tourist center in the world. Politically, it is the head of the municipality of Benito Juárez, in the state of Quintana Roo. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) through its foundation UNWTO-Themis granted the Best of the Best award "for excellence and governance" to the Cancun Tourism Promotion Trust on February 3, 2007.

Carnivals

February marks the beginning of the region's carnival season. Merida, Campeche, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Cancun are filled with color in a party full of musical, cultural, handicraft and gastronomic events. In Cancun, various sectors of society, in coordination with the local city council, participate in the presentation of colorful caravans that travel the main avenues of the city and in the contest to select the queen and the ugly king of the carnival.
