Can the e-juice go stale?

by River Supply River Supply Co.

The answer to this question is definitely a “Yes.”. E-liquids come with expiration dates, meaning once they surpass a particular period, they will go stale, regardless of how effective the storing method was.

The reason for expiration is due to the chemical reaction caused by the degradation of flavorings and oxidation of nicotine. Usually, older e-liquids will contain less nicotine and a hampered taste. But the aging effect of E-juice bottles will vary based on quality, method of creation, and many more.

So, what happens once the e-juice goes stale?

1- Color changes:

E-juices tend to darken over time, mainly e-liquids with nicotine. And don’t worry, this reaction is totally normal. Nicotine undergoes a chemical reaction known as oxidation, where nicotine reacts with oxygen to change its form. And while changing, the liquid ends up changing its color too.

But if the color is darker than yellow or brown, then that is a clear sign of a bad e-juice bottle.

2- Separation:

Vape juice contains various ingredients, right from VG, PG to flavoring and nicotine. Sometimes when the product is improperly stored or kept for a longer time, the ingredients start to separate. Some type of separation is fine; you just need to shake the liquid properly.

But when vape liquids are kept for too long, regardless of how much you shake the bottle, the ingredients will not mix. These can be due to the crystallization of flavors. Such e-liquids are not worth the risk.

3- Changes in smell and taste:

Vape juices have a crisp smell and taste when the bottle is brand new. But when the e-liquid is kept for longer, the flavors degrade, resulting in losing the taste profile and odor aspect.

If you come across one of the e-liquids that doesn’t taste or smells like it did before, then it is time to stock new ones.

4- Changes in thickness:

E-liquids have a normal consistency, meaning they are neither thick nor flowy. But if you notice that the mixture has turned either thicker or runnier, then it is a telltale sign that the vape juice is gone stale.

Such vape juices are not just unpleasant to vape, but they can hurt the coils too.

5- Nicotine degradation:

Nicotine degrades as time flies, meaning the older the vape juice gets, the less nicotine potency it will have. And as nicotine degrades, it will end up degrading your e-juice too. And that means your e-juice will not only taste bad but will not satisfy your cravings either.

Bottom line
