Bring Home The Right Mat - Floor Mats, Tub Mats, Door Mats

by Roopa Behari Analyst

There are two main reasons as to why people buy mats - to protect or maintain a home and to add a sense of style. Before buying mats, it is important to know their material, purpose, durability, and maintenance.

Floor Mats

Strategically placing floor mats around the house will make life easier for you. Constantly cleaning the house can be infuriating and inconvenient. Place mats at the entrance of the room, by the bedside, and anywhere else you feel the need to. Wipe your feet on these before jumping into bed or curling into your sofa to avoid dirtying them. It is also best to avoid wearing slippers inside the house. If you must, there are bedroom slippers meant for indoor use. To prevent bringing outdoor mess into your home, leave your shoes at the door or arrange them neatly on a shoe rack near the entrance. Wipe outdoor footwear thoroughly with a dry cloth before bringing them into your home. These tips are simple and following them will greatly improve your home’s cleanliness. Indoor floor mats are usually made of absorbent materials such as cloth, rayon, and cotton. Bamboo floor mats are generally decorative pieces. Because of their absorbent nature, indoor floor mats are not meant for constant friction. They should not be used to wipe solid dirt off shoes and slippers. Their purpose is to dry your feet and indoor slippers.

Tub/Bath Mats

Tub mats are meant to absorb excess water and should ideally be made of absorbent materials such as cotton, cloth, rayon, wool, and the like. Place a bath mat at the foot of the tub and at the bathroom entrance. Often, while showering or cleaning the bathroom, water tends to spill over. Bath mats absorb this and help keep your home dry. Also, if not careful, it is possible to lose footing and hurt yourself on a slippery floor. Right placement of bath mats will help prevent such accidents.

Door mats

Door mats are placed at the entrance of a home. These are built to take constant friction and should be made of non absorbent materials. Polypropylene fibers are stain resistant and make for perfect outdoor mats. Rubber, dragon grass, polycoir are some other materials ideal for outdoor mats.Avoid placing absorbent cotton or cloth mats at the entrance. These absorb water and does not really help clean your shoes. Rubber mats are easy to clean and will serve you well even during the rainy season.

Maintenance of floor mats depend on its material. To clean outdoor mats, simply wash them down using a hard broom or brush. Bath mats and indoor floor mats can be machine washed. Soak them in detergent for some time if you are to hand wash them. It is also good to have spare mats for when the other is being cleaned. Mats do not require much space for storage; just make sure they are completely dry before putting them away. Depending on your choice, you can pick and choose from a number of designs. Also available are disney inspired mats for your little one.
