Boost your Driving Experience with Mazda CX-5 2021

by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a popular compact crossover SUV that has received positive reviews from both critics and car enthusiasts. It is known for its stylish design, engaging driving dynamics, and well-crafted interior. However, there were areas that needed improvement, especially in terms of interior space. Now, let's explore some pros and cons of the 2021 Mazda CX-5.

5 Pros

Excellent Handling and Steering

The power and delivery of the CX-5 engines are progressively linear, with the base engine capable of accelerating from 0 – 100 kph in just 8.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the turbocharged engine gets to 100 kph in 6.6 seconds, with the 6-speed automatic transmission. This applies to all CX-5 models, even the one fitted with a 2.2-liter diesel engine.

The CX-5 is sharp, direct, and offers a communicative steering wheel that is very impressive, which enables the driver to take corners at great speeds while managing body roll very well. Undoubtedly, the CX-5 is the best small crossover when it comes to handling.

Luxurious Design

The 2021 Mazda CX-5's interior is a strong selling point for the vehicle. It offers a luxurious and premium feel that sets it apart from many non-luxury compact crossover SUVs. Now, if you value a high-quality interior and are willing to pay a bit more for it, the CX-5 provides a compelling option that rivals luxury models in terms of interior design and comfort.

Comfortable and Peaceful Cabin

The use of double-laminated front windows in the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a feature that significantly enhances the cabin's comfort and helps isolate the occupants from the external environment. Combined with neatly designed and supportive seats it results in a more enjoyable and peaceful driving experience. It's a testament to Mazda's commitment to providing a premium and refined driving experience in its vehicles.

Technological Features

The 2021 CX-5 comes fitted with plenty of technological features, from entertainment, driver assists, safety, and more. It includes a 10.25-inch infotainment system with smartphone integration integrated with a navigation system, head-up display (HUD), and Mazda voice control system which is capable of taking instructions using natural speech recognition. Also comes with lane departure warning with lane keep assist, low-speed forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Another standard feature is the G-Vectoring Control Plus.

Stunning Exterior

The Mazda CX-5's exterior styling, color choices, and special editions have been key factors in its appeal to buyers who want a vehicle that not only performs well but also looks stylish and distinctive. With the release of the 2020 CX-5, Mazda introduced a new Carbon Edition which features a black metallic grille, Polymetal Gray paint, and black 19-inch alloy wheels.

5 Cons

Cramped Rear Space

The CX-5 is specified as a five-seat car, but only four people can comfortably sit in the rear seat unless they are kids. The middle seat has limited leg room and the cargo area offers 875 liters with rear seats in place and 1687 liters with rear seats folded. A bit smaller than what its competitors can offer.

Engine Noise

The engine noise, especially at higher revs, is a common characteristic of many vehicles, and it can become more noticeable in certain conditions. When it comes to the 2021 Mazda CX-5, it seems that engine noise is the primary sound you'll hear inside the cabin, which is typical when the engine is working hard to accelerate or maintain higher speeds.

No Hybrid Model

Many manufacturers are investing in hybrid technology to offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. However, the absence of a hybrid model in the 2021 Mazda CX-5 lineup might be due to various factors. As the demand for eco-friendly vehicles continues to grow, automakers are likely to introduce more hybrid and electric options in their lineups, and it's possible that a hybrid CX-5 or similar models may become available in the future.

Average Base Engine

The CX-5 is a fun car to drive regardless of the engine, but the base engine is not as enticing as the turbocharged one. Currently, the turbocharged engine only comes fitted in the top trims only. Mazda may indeed consider making it more widely available in the future to enhance the vehicle's appeal and competitiveness in the market.

Rough Ride

The CX-5 is sportier and the interior is cushy but all this is overshadowed by its firm ride.  Even with 17-inch wheels with high-profile rubbers, the ride is still rough, and the suspensions do not seem to stabilize the car. On models with 19-inch wheels, the situation is even worse.

Finally

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 continues to offer a compelling package for those seeking a compact crossover SUV. It excels in numerous aspects, making it a strong contender in its category. However, addressing the specific areas of concern may depend on individual preferences and priorities. Always consider your own needs and usage when evaluating any vehicle to ensure it aligns with your expectations and requirements.
