Blood Sugar

by Tony Sigona Business Man

Introduction:

As the name suggests, Blood sugar concentration is the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. It is measured in milligram per decilitre (mg/dl). The levels vary throughout the day depending upon the diet and exertion. The blood sugar levels can be easily controlled by the foods a person eats.

Regulation:

 To maintain a good and healthy body, the blood sugar levels need to be regulated. Both the low as well as high levels are disease causing.

High blood sugar is also known as hyperglycemia whereas low level is known as hypoglycemia. Insulin hormone secreted by pancreas regulates the level of sugar in blood. Insulin is secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas. It is secreted in response to the sugar level in the blood. For this reason, the insulin secretion increases after a meal.

Hyerglycemia is common among people having diabetes. So, the term ‘high blood sugar is many times used interchangeably with diabetes. The hyperglycemia is of two kinds;

Fasting hyperglycemia : Having concentration higher than 130 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) after not eating or drinking for at least 8 hours.

After meal hyperglycemia: Having concentration higher than 180 mg/dL 2 hours after one eats. It is also known as Post prandial hyperglycemia.

Diagnosis of Diabetes:

The diagnosis of diabetes is made if any one of the following happens;

·         Two consecutive days fasting blood glucose levels  that are equal to or greater than 126 mg/dL

·          Random blood glucose level that is greater than 200 mg/dL

·         An HbA1c test that is equal to or more than 6.5 percent. A1c is an easy blood test that gives a three month average picture of the glucose levels

·         A two-hour oral glucose tolerance test (also known as GTT) with any value more than 200 mg/dL

Control and prevention of complications:

Keeping the levels within the range is the key point in the management of diabetes.

Controlling the levels prevents the complications of diabetes. The long term high levels can damage blood vessels, nerves, eyes and other body organs. So, it is really important to treat hyperglycemia.

To maintain healthy blood glucose levels, one has to follow a balanced diet plan, engage in an active lifestyle with sufficient physical activity apart from taking blood glucose-lowering medications over the years. One needs to take other medications also to control blood pressure and lipids (cholesterol) levels.

 Studies have proved that considering some additional lifestyle tips can also help control blood sugar and improve overall health;

·         Consistent eating habits

·         Eating healthy Carbohydrates

·         Organic Teas/Green tea cup daily

·         Proper sleep hours

·         Lots of fluid intake

·         Vinegar intake

·         Exercise routine

·         Cinnamon

·         Bitter melon

Bitter melon or Momordica charantia is a tropical fruit having blood sugar lowering properties, demonstrated in over 100 research studies till now The ingredient in the fruit called lectin along with other four chemical compounds, lower the levels of sugar in the blood. It stimulates an enzyme in the body that mimics the method by which exercise utilizes sugar in the blood. This implies that bitter melon moves the sugar in the blood to the muscles and is then converted into energy, instead of getting converted to fat.
