Benefits of seeing a Hormone Naturopath in Sydney

by Joanne Kennedy Joanne Kennedy | Sydney Naturopath

Naturopathy can offer immense benefits to women with hormonal imbalances that are caused by genetic mutations or hormonal imbalances.  Natural medicine is an effective way of treating many genetic mutations as it is the environment that that determines whether a genetic mutation is expressed or not. This is called epigenetics.  Hormonal imbalances also occur due to issues with a women’s environment, for example, dietary and nutrient deficiencies or excesses, exposure to xenoestrogens, dysbiosis in the gut and stress.

One genetic mutation that can affect hormonal balance is the MTHFR gene mutation.  Natural medicine can offer MTHFR Support by correcting the women’s folate status as well as other nutrients that are required for methylation including Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, Zinc, Choline and methionine.  It is important to correct methylation and methylation is needed for liver detoxification of oestrogen.  A build up of oestrogen can cause PMS breast tenderness, bloating and fluid retention, mood swings, insomnia and breast tenderness.  Methylation issues can also contribute to a severe form of PMS called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

Hormonal imbalance also occurs when women fail to ovulate well.  Ovulation produces progesterone which buffers the effects of oestrogen.  Having low progesterone can cause issues such as anxiety and insomnia as progesterone increases GABA in the brain which is a calming neurotransmitter.

Natural ways to reduce oestrogen and increase progesterone include eliminating inflammatory foods from your diet such as wheat, gluten, sugar and fried foods, supporting the health of the follicles with antioxidant supplements including n-acetyl-cystine, glutathione, vitamin C, zinc and selenium.  You can also support the detoxification of oestrogen though the liver with indole-3-carbinol or DIM, activated B vitamins or SAMe.  To support progesterone production, you need certain nutrients including vitamin D, zinc, iron, selenium and iodine.  There is also a wonderful herb called Chaste tree that support progesterone production.

Women when they are stressed will also have lower levels of progesterone.  Some supplements you can take to support stress include magnesium, activated B vitamins, vitamin C, taurine and phosphatidylserine.  Herbal medicine is also wonderful at supporting stress.  These herbs include withania, licorice, skullcap, lemon balm, ziziphus, passionflower, rhodiola and Schisandra.
