Behind The Mercedes Benz Logo: Revealing The Three-Pointed Star

by Dylan Callahan IT Consultant
The three-pointed star is the logo of the most popular German automaker for over 100 years. The company we know today is established in 1926, when DMG and Benz & Cie merged in order to deal with the economic crisis during the World War II. Prior merging, both companies operated separately and both had different logos. Mercedes Benz has become a synonym for first-class, reliable, top-notch engineering, innovation and advanced technology, which has paved the way to the brand's success. While most companies change their logos quite often completely, Mercedes Benz has kept its iconic triangle star and made only a few improvements over the years.

The consistency and commitment of Mercedes Benz are better than most of the car brands and its logo has helped the brand to build a strong identity. The design of the well-known Mercedes Benz logo has been featured on millions of car models for a hundred years, but do you know what is its meaning? Many car enthusiasts struggle to find a meaning in a simple silver star, because there are many made up stories about its true origin. Yet, most consider the iconic logo to be just a common star, designed into an attractive logo.

Gottlieb Daimler (the founder of Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, or DMG) is believed to be the designer of the glorious three-pointed star. His sons, Adolf and Paul, supposedly found an old postcard from their father after he died. The postcard was addressed to their mother and he used a three-pointed star to mark the location of his house in Germany. Another story tells that he drew the Mercedes Benz logo and sent it to his wife, explaining that this symbol will become a symbol of a big company. Either way, the lucky star did bring success to a big and successful company, a company that turned out to be one of the most successful companies ever.

At first, the three-pointed star was the official logo of DMG and when the company merged with Benz & Cie, the newly founded company kept the iconic logo and that's how Mercedes Benz logo we all know is born. Before merging, Benz & Cie used a simple logo of the letters BENZ, enclosed by a laurel wreath. In addition to its intriguing and a little bit suspicious origin, the logo has a deep meaning as well. The logo of the German automaker also symbolizes its domination of land, sea and air transportation. The Mercedes Benz symbol today uses a stylish three-pointed star in an elegant silver circle. Simple, yet designed to perfection, Mercedes Benz has done a great job in creating a logo to build identity on.
