There are different types of basement construction.  One of the basement construction methods that are common is the construction of a basement under a house.  However in recent times we are doing works where basement construction in the garden where basements are being constructed in the out buildings at the bottom of the garden.  Thus effectively by adding the basement we end up providing a two floor residential property.  Basement construction in London is quite extensive area of work due to property prices, which makes them cost effective.

To construct a basement under the house we first have to underpin the property to extend the foundations of the exiting house. There are various types of piling, open bore piling, continuous flight auger piling, secant piling, driven piling, contiguous piling.  Each type of piling has a specific use; the most common type of piling is the open bore piling, which is basically where the concrete is poured after you have drilled a hole in the ground.  On most households in London the average piling depth is about ten metres.  Continuous flight auger piling also known as CFA piling is where the auger is of a longer length normally over three metres.  This allows piling to be done quickly compared to segment piling where the auger in segmented piling is about one metre in length.  Segmented piling is normally associated with mini piling or micro piling.  In both the CFA piling and segmented piling the concrete is injected into bored hole as the auger is withdrawn, bit like an injection.  CFA piling, continuous flight auger is also known as injection grout piling.

There are various types’ groundworks, which include trench foundations in London we do.  We normally would do deep trench foundations as part of our groundworks package, which includes up to a depth of about two metres and have gone down to depths of three metres for trench foundations, which involve additional support work to ensure that the foundation does not collapse.  Shallow trench foundations tend to be up to a depth of one metre, which is the common depth for most house extensions in London.
