Barcelona beaches – Get to know the Best Beaches in the City

by Ivan HBCN Owner
The city of Barcelona has around 9 beaches that stretch for over 4 kilometres just in the urban area. But for those who love to explore, the coastal line around the city should also be noted for its beauty. All together, the beaches are an interesting blend of “LA style” promenades with bikers, skaters, musicians, while keeping its authentic Mediterranean blue water and tourist luxury (yachts, surfs, etc.). National Geographic called Barcelona “the number one Beach City” in the World. While this may seem grandiose to sum, most people will find even the most busy of them - quite relaxing.

The most famous one is the beach of Barceloneta, with its many bars, restaurants and outdoor attractions. One will find street musicians, sandy statues and other entertainers all around, and can enjoy a drink in one of the many bars and clubs. The outdoor market of Barceloneta is also a nice place to see all kinds of interesting DIY stuff and get some fresh food as well. There is also the Museum of Catalan history (Museum d'Historia de Catalunya) for those interested in Catalan culture. In any case, the beach is a great experience, especially in the colder hours of the day.

Going north of Barceloneta one gets to the Olympic harbour where you can check out the many bars like Shoko, Opium, CDLC, etc. The marina there is also place for many luxurious restaurants that offer the best of sea food. After that come the more relaxed beaches of Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella, and Llevanc. The beaches are newer in construction and have a lot of sporting facilities.

If one is interested in exploring the outside Barcelona beaches, highly recommended are the Castelldefels, Badalona, Garraf and Sitges. Castelldefels is the beach with most people on and certainly a one with the finer sand. Badalona is filled with restaurants and sailing clubs, another interesting thing to do in the Barcelones (the county of Barcelona). Garraf and Sitges are the more alternative and very charming cities to go to a beach – although in summer period Sitges is as packed as Barcelona, so go early if you want to get a spot on the central beach.

Finally, most beaches are filled with the 'illegal' vendors of 'cervezas (Spanish for “beer”)' or other accessories for the beach, on a negotiable price. Stay awake, however, as scammers and pocketers are also always around.

If you are up for some yoga or other creative workshops on the great Barcelona Beaches, or you are interested to offer tours, workshops and other activities on the beach, then visit hereBarcelona and start exploring similar services, or post one yourself.
