This fungus can be found throughout the world but certain areas are prone to it like Australia, Southern California and Canada. Dogs catch this fungus through their nasal passages which is then passed into eyes, brain, lungs and other parts of the body. However this disease is rare in dogs. Introduction to Cryptococcosis in Dogs

Cryptococcosis, i.e. systemic fungal infection is caused by Cryptococcus. It is an organism that is found in the excrement and soil, generally in the excreta of pigeon and can remain potentially infecting for around 2 years. This fungus does not infect dogs but can infect cats and humans as well. This infection begins in dogs in the nasal cavity, further spreading to the brain, digestive system, skin, bone, lymph nodes, heart, muscles and other organs. When these fungus attack a dog they migrate to the respiratory system where they create small areas of granulomas or immune cells which cause inflammation. These lesions form in different parts of the body resulting in altered mental state, upper respiratory disease, seizures and loss of movements.
