The predicted number of migrants expected to come in Australia has increased since May's budget.

According to Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, permanent migration to Australia would be expanded to 160,000 individuals per year to aid the country's economic recovery and meet skills shortages.

He was speaking ahead of Thursday's budget update, the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO), in which he claimed the federal government, expects 120,000 more people to migrate overseas over the next two years than the May federal budget forecast.

According to The Australian newspaper, the additional migrants will help the Australian economy recover from the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic. "With one of the highest immunisation rates in the world, our international borders are opening six months ahead of schedule, causing a massive shift in migration patterns," he continued.

"The MYEFO (Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook) will demonstrate that over the next two years, we expect 120,000 more migrants than expected, boosting economic activity and delivering a much-needed boost to our recovery."

Australia's net foreign migration went into negative territory for the first time since World War Two as a result of significant COVID-19 travel limitations and border closures, suggesting that more migrants departed than came.

Net overseas migration for fiscal year 2021-22 was anticipated to be minus 77,000 in the May budget, however this will be revised up to minus 41,000.

According to the publication, the estimates for fiscal year 2022-23 will likewise be revised upwards.

The news was "more headlines than announcements," according to Andrew Leigh, the Labour Party's assistant Treasury spokeswoman.

He went on to say, "When Labour has a strategy, they will respond to the government's migration plan."

Australians, on the other hand, want to know the truth, not the spin. They require some substance when it comes to the crucial topic of migration.

All we have today is another figure, tossed around in the hopes of producing a headline or a sound bite. The balance between temporary and permanent migration, as well as family reunion and skilled migration, must all be addressed in a migration strategy according to the government.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia will have around 7.6 million migrants in the year ending 30 June 2020.

A total of 29.8% of the population was born outside of the nation.
