Australian Government: Fee-Free Courses and Increased Intake Are Being Considered

Regarding the government’s actions to decrease the labor shortage, Anthony Albanese, the Australian Prime Minister, said the government promised 456,000 fee-free Tafe courses to help address some skills shortages. The PM also said that the government’s objective is to develop a robust VET sector that will enable more Australians to find stable, well-paying jobs and supply the skilled workers needed by industry to boost the economy.

The government is also considering increasing the intake for the Australian immigration program from 160,000 to 200,000. With the increased intake, it is hoped that skilled workers would have a broader chance to come to Australia.

According to the survey conducted by HAYS with employers in Australia and New Zealand, opening the international border, according to 55% of employers, will assist a bit with the shortages but won’t completely address the issue. The same survey also showed that 91% of businesses are already facing a skills shortage. 83%, up from 64% the previous year, said it would affect their organization's successful functioning or growth goals.

It indicates to overcome the skills shortage, the reopening of the border is not the only thing to be focused on. The Australian government must consider the Australian immigration program, especially for skilled workers.

Sandra Elhelw, the Chief Executive of the Settlement Council of Australia, said the long process from being a temporary visa holder to a permanent visa holder is not the way to attract the world’s most talented migrants. Universities Australia states a similar point: immediate residency options for students who wish to remain in Australia as their home after graduation must be considered.
