Are Electronic Cigarettes Harmful Alternatives to Smoking?

by Curtis Matthews Web designer
The electronic smokeless cigarette provides the user with a vaporized nicotine. That's nicotine in its purest form. Its one of best alternatives to smoking for the folks who want to enjoy the tactile experience of smoking without the cons of tobacco. But are electronic cigarettes harmful? You still get the draw and throat hit you're used to. But without the harmful smoke, chemicals, or second hand smoke. That's because there is no smoke! Vaping is literally just drawing on the ecig and inhaling vaporized nicotine. Here's how it works; When you draw on an e-cig the battery turns on. This battery gives power to the atomizer which heats up the liquid nicotine in the cartridge. That liquid turns to water vapor that you then breathe in. And the vapor looks a lot like the smoke you're used to. Traditional tobacco cigs have over 5000 known chemicals in them. And according to some researchers like Michael Siegel from Boston University, there could be upwards of 100,000 that have still yet to be identified. Many of these are known carcinogens and this plethora of poisons is inarguably responsible for the numerous documented risks of smoking traditional cigs. On the other hand, check out electronic cigarettes. With only nicotine, water, and a vegetable glycerine called propylene glycol, they're a perfect alternative to smoking. Reports of any additional substances and chemicals in e-cigs are widley over blown and unfounded. One recent study consideredd 18 different e cigs and reported that 1 of those contained 1% diethylene glycol. The media has dramatically pointed out that this is commonly found in non toxic antifreeze. That's non toxic antifreeze. That deserves a careful distinction. Because its a also common in quantities 10 times higher in aspirin. And 40 times as much of it is found in tobacco cigs. Some tobacco specific carcinogens were also found in some brands of e-cigs but in significantly lower quantities than traditional cigs. And these were found in the cartridge itself, not in the vapor. Its significant to point out this distinction because there 56 know carcinogens in tobacco smoke. Is propylene glycol potentially dangerous? Well, its been calculated that an individual would have to consume over 12,000 cartridges within a 24 hour period to be exposed to it in toxic levels. But, the average vaper will consume 1.5-3 a day. For most smokers who want to keep the tactile experience of smoking without the negative affects of tobacco cigs, the electronic smokeless cigarette one of the best alternatives to smoking.
