Are Discrete and Unobtrusive Ear Canal Hearing Aids The Right Choice For You?

by Amit Sahni Audiologist

Do you suffer from mild to moderate hearing loss but are hesitant about getting hearing aids because you think they’re embarrassed or uncomfortable? Ear canal hearing aids are among the smallest and most discreet hearing aid styles in the market and could be an option for you.

In-the-Canal Hearing Aids

There are three styles of ear canal hearing aids – in the canal (ITC) hearing aids, completely in canal (CIC) hearing aids and invisible in the canal (IIC) hearing aids – that are suitable for individuals suffering from mild to moderate hearing loss. ITC hearing aids fit almost entirely in the ear canal but are slightly larger than the other two styles. Due to the slightly larger faceplate, some models have convenient features such as modifiable volume controls and microphones. Sound quality of ITC hearing aids is natural as they use the acoustics of the ear canal.

Completely-In-Canal Hearing Devices

CIC hearing aids sit deep inside the ear canal and are more discrete than ITC hearing aids. They are among the least visible hearing aids available in the market today. They also use ear canal acoustics and hence are less likely to pick up wind noise. Without wind noise, individuals using these hearing devices can hear voices and sounds better in outdoor environments. All three styles – ITC hearing aids, CIC hearing aids, and IIC hearing devices are custom made to ensure they fit comfortably in your ear.

Invisible-In-Canal Hearing Instruments

IIC hearing aids are practically invisible because they sit deep in the ear canal. These unobtrusive hearing instruments are embedded close to the eardrum and catch the natural sounds directed by the outer ear. IIC hearing aids help users determine the direction of the sound. Although tiny in size, IIC hearing devices are big on digital technology. The more advanced models can be connected to a smartphone application and users can control the device through the phone’s touch screen.

Where to Begin?

Ear canal hearing aids are offered by leading hearing aid manufacturers. To know whether they are an option for you, it’s best to have a hearing assessment done by a qualified audiologist at a reputed hearing clinic. If it is determined that they are a suitable solution for your type of hearing loss, you may go on to explore the above mentioned styles and features available with different models. An audiologist will be able to guide you to arrive at the best option based on your needs, lifestyle, budget and aesthetic preferences.
