Apple patents futuristic gesture technology

by Alicia Brown Application Developer

Not too long ago, technologies were just ideas that film-makers came up with to make their movies look futuristic. Films like Jurassic Park and Back to the Future gave us ideas like touchscreens and holograms, and the geniuses among us made it happen. Apple Inc., the brainchild of visionary Steve Jobs, is one of the companies that have always been at the forefront of technological revolutions. From portable music players, to touchscreens and smartphones, Apple has always given us a piece of the future to use and play with. Now, Apple has apparently patented another concept that looks more like a work of fiction.

According to the latest reports from leading companies like SmartIOApp, Apple has filled a new patent application that would give them rights over a system that allows the exchange of information between Apple Watch users using basic hand and greeting gestures. The specifics of the application indicate that under the technology, users would be required to create commands using gestures such as a handshake, a hug, a fist bump or a bow, to transfer content between one another.

As you may well now, the Apple Watch can recognize a greeting when two people with their own Watch are within proximity. Technology under the new patent would basically extend on the current technology by either partially or completely automating the exchange of data so that it is based on the Apple Watch detecting a greeting.

A report that was earlier published on Patently Apple states that whenever a gesture is detected, the “sending” device would be able to pick certain information to be sent to the “receiving” device, all on the basis of contextual information that is fed to it beforehand. The report also suggests that under the technology, users would be able to further manage the information that the device produces in response to the pre-fed  greetings. Users would also be able to encrypt certain information items to be sent to the receiving device, once a greeting is detected.

Although the Apple Watch seems like a device well-suited for such a system, Apple has taken notice of the fact that the application can be tailored to be compatible with many other wearable items including jewelry of any kind that has NFC functionality. So that means there is more to look forward to in terms of “smart things”.

So you see, modern day science is working towards making previously-outrageous ideas into workable and profitable technologies. Perhaps the day we fly off to work, and live like The Jetsons is not too far off.
