Anti Rabies Vaccination – Prophylaxis of Rabies

Rabies is one of the fatal diseases caused due to the biting of canine animals. It is caused by a virus that causes acute brain inflammation, especially in warm-blooded animals and human beings. If not treated properly with the anti-rabies medication, the disease can turn fatal. Examples of some of the animals that can cause rabies are squirrels, monkeys, dogs, etc. Vaccines for rabies are both safe and effective. With the availability of a number of vaccines, its usage can be either before or after the exposure of virus.

This is a zoonotic disease that is being transmitted from one animal to another by a bite or getting in contact with the body fluid. As soon as the rabies virus enters the blood, it starts to enter the central nervous system and then travels to the brain. It continuously gets reproduced within the body of the infected person. The incubation period of this virus is between 40 days to two months. If the virus reaches the brain, it becomes fatal resulting in death within days. If in case there is suspicion of being bitten by a rabid animal, it becomes essential to be administered with anti-rabies vaccination.

Symptoms of Rabies Virus

A headache, irritation, muscle pain, fever, nausea, etc. are some of the earliest symptoms of rabies. One of the most common rabies symptoms is Hydrophobia, fear of water. At the starting, there will be a lot of pain in joints along with malaise and high fever. On this stage, the disease can be treated. At the final stage of disease, patient undergoes short bouts of mania and excessive lethargy and finally goes into coma

Thus, to conclude, rabies is a fatal disease that can easily be prevented by vaccination. This is the reason why indoor pets also should be vaccinated against rabies. As it is always said that an ounce of prevention is actually worth to an ounce of cure especially in case of rabies, as there is no cure. Hence, prevention is what which is always required.
