Previously on Animal Practice Season 1 Episode 3 "Clean-Smelling Pirate", When a young boy's busy father leaves him at the hospital with their Parson Russell Terrier in kidney failure, George must tap his softer side to help the boy deal with the situation. While Dorothy tries to give the case to Doug, who is brilliant with kids, George insists that he is up for the challenge.

On this week's Episode title "Dr. Yamamazing", Dr. Yamamoto performs a successful emergency surgery on the Mayor's dog and becomes a media darling, much to George's dismay. Meanwhile, Dorothy, hires an accomplished new doctor at the hospital, Dr. Jill Leiter, who is beautiful, tough, and sure to keep George on his toes.

Animal Practice is a new comedy centering on Dr. George Coleman (Justin Kirk, "Weeds," "Angels in America"), a top veterinarian with an impressive list of famous animal patients at the Crane Animal Hospital - a bustling New York City veterinary practice where it often seems as if the patients are running the place. Despite his unorthodox style, George has an undeniable gift with animals of all kinds - except the human kind. Much to his chagrin, George recently learned that his ex-girlfriend, Dorothy Crane (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, "Better with You"), has inherited the family business and is now George's boss. Whip-smart and ambitious, Dorothy shakes up the hospital as she brings order to the chaos and butts heads with George's animal-friendly administration.

Tyler Labine ("Reaper," "Sons of Tucson") plays Dr. Doug Jackson, a vet who's great with animals, but hapless in matters of the heart; Bobby Lee ("Harold & Kumar") stars as Dr. Yamamoto; Kym Whitley ("We Bought a Zoo") stars as Juanita; and newcomer Betsy Sodaro ("The Nick Show Kroll") stars as Nurse Angela. Dr. Rizzo, the resident capuchin monkey at Crane Animal Hospital and George's closest companion is played by Crystal ("The Hangover II," NBC's "Community").

Executive producers are Scot Armstrong ("The Hangover Part II," "Old School") and Ravi Nandan ("Best Friends Forever") of American Work Inc., along with Emmy Award winners Joe and Anthony Russo ("Community," "Arrested Development"), as well as Gail Lerner ("Happy Endings"). "Animal Practice" was written by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka ("The Sitter"), who also serve as executive producers.

Animal Practice is a production of Universal Television and American Work Inc.

The setup for "Animal Practice" is that Dorothy inherits the clinic and becomes George's new boss. She quickly brings order out of chaos, but George bolts after a horrible man wants to put his daughter's Yorkie to sleep rather than paying for expensive surgery. A stand-off ensues, but you don't really think they'd kill the dog, do you?

"Animal Practice" is the kind of show where someone randomly carries a penguin around, where a tiger, giving birth, is rushed over in a cage, and where hamsters ride racing turtles.

Nothing that happens is remotely plausible, even the premise that George and Dorothy once dated. I've liked Kirk in many things, including "Angels in America" and "Weeds," but this unpleasant role will require him to soften at least a bit to be bearable. Garcia-Swisher was sweet in "Reba" and she's sweet here; the supporting players, except for Tyler Labine ("Reaper") as a put-upon junior vet, are painfully cartoonish.

But did I mention that there's a monkey, and that the monkey wears a little white lab coat? If you enjoy animal sight gags, "Animal Practice" will provide at least a few laughs.
