Air Fryer Oven: What you Need to Know

by Hei White Heiwhite

The air fryer oven is similar to the convection oven, but it comes with an air frying feature that optimizes temperature and air circulation. Hot air will circulate very quickly around the surface of the food, causing it to crisp up quickly, creating a delicious, golden crust.

There are several brands that make ovens with air frying capabilities, such as Whirlpool, so you can cook your favorite foods like wings, chicken nuggets, or fries without having to use an extra appliance. In comparison to deep frying, air frying uses less oil and doesn't require a separate appliance.

Air fryer vs. convection oven: what’s the difference?

Countertop air fryers and convection ovens work similarly, just with different sizes. Both have fans that circulate heat in either a countertop air fryer or oven cavity to create crispy, air-fried food. The smaller compartments in countertop air fryers make them more efficient than convection ovens, so they may cook faster. Convection ovens have a larger capacity than air fryers, so you can cook up more food at once than air fryers do.

Are convection ovens suitable for air frying?

Using a convection oven can crisp up food, but you'll need to use the air fry function. A convection fan circulates hot air around food in an oven cavity or air fryer compartment in a convection oven or air fryer oven. In order to achieve a crisp finish on foods, it is advisable to use an air fryer setting, but you can still use a convection oven if you choose. You can help with this by purchasing an air fryer basket or tray. Convection ovens can also be used for air frying for the following reasons:

Air frying capabilities take away the need for another counter-space-consuming appliance by using a convection oven or an oven with air frying capabilities.

Cleaning up is easy - An air fryer requires cleaning the basket as well as the pullout compartment that the food goes into after every use, as opposed to using a sheet pan in a convection oven.

You can air fry in your convection oven to get satisfyingly crispy results, especially if you use dark cookware and perforated baskets.

Air fryers don't have the same capacity as convection ovens, so you can cook more food at once than with a countertop air fryer, where you might have to cook in batches depending on the number of servings.

Air fry your convection oven

Convection ovens without air fry modes or options can still achieve similar results to air fryers if a few adaptations are made.

To learn how to prepare food for air frying, what cookware to use, ideal temperatures, and when to flip food, read the five steps below. Air frying in a convection oven or traditional oven with an air fry mode can be done using these tips to get golden and crispy results.

Step 1: Prepare your food for air-frying.

The food that you intend to air fry needs to be prepared so that it can be crispy and golden. It is best to cut veggies and potatoes into smaller bite-sized pieces to get that crunchy exterior, so coat them lightly in oil to encourage browning and cut them into spears, medallions or cubes.

When cooking meat or fish, such as air fried salmon, make sure that the skin doesn't get too wet by patting the surface dry and lightly coating it with cooking spray or oil. As opposed to using wet batter, air frying produces better results with a drier exterior (think about adding toppings like panko, shredded cheese or breadcrumbs).

Step 2: Use the right air fryer

There is a reason countertop air fryers crisp up your food so well because they have perforated baskets or pans for air frying. When cooking with an air fryer, you will achieve similar crispiness levels if you use a perforated tray or basket to allow the hot air to circulate evenly across the entire surface of the food. You can use a dark or nonstick tray with low sides, or a cooling rack if you don't have a perforated basket or tray. Learn how to use aluminum foil in an air fryer oven by placing a cookie sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper on the lower rack.

Step 3: Give your food space

For your food to cook/crisp evenly and thoroughly, don't overcrowd it. For a golden crust to develop, the hot air that is circulated around the oven cavity must reach the entire surface of your food. If you overcrowd your oven, proper crisping will not occur and you may end up with a soggy exterior instead.

Step 4: Be mindful of air-frying times and temperatures

The cooking times will probably have to be adjusted if you're using a convection oven rather than a countertop air fryer since convection ovens usually cook slower. You'll also need to account for higher temperatures when finding the right cooking times for countertop air fryers. Convection ovens are typically set at 350°F to 400°F for air frying, but the temperature may vary from recipe to recipe.

When using a recipe for a conventional oven, it's best to refer to the oven manufacturer's instructions on how long and what temperature to cook. You can use the times on the package or recipe if you don't have your instruction manual handy, and keep an eye on your food during the cooking process. Click here

Step 5: Flip halfway through

When cooking with a countertop air fryer, you may want to flip or shake your food to ensure that air is evenly distributed across the food surfaces, but flipping should only be done when necessary to prevent heat loss. You can promote crisping by spraying or rubbing with some extra oil or cooking spray.
