A weekend at the Flea (market).

by Liuexa S. Nurse
Ahhh, the flea market. A place where junk is treasured and kitsch the norm. And obviously something I like to frequent as much as possible. Unfortunately though I am a bit jaded nowadays. I look at so much vintage all the time, that it takes something truly unique and outstanding to catch my attention view it. This makes both for a less than thrilling shopping experience, but simultaneously a much wiser shopper out of me. I don't get caught up in the excitement of being surrounded by so much cool and old stuff, and make better decisions when considering a purchase. Plus as we know it, I already own so much stuff! So needing anything is out of the question. At the Brooklyn flea yesterday, I spotted a few unique pieces that I've never seen before and thought were worth a try. One was a pair of glasses. The color and shape so special, my eyes gravitated towards them as soon as I reached the booth. Extinct Optics sells a ton of dead stock from the 60's 70's and 80's. Most the frames are in perfect condition, and the styles quite timely oasap womens hoodies. This pair was so different than all others I already own, which of course cover all possibly desirable and trendy shapes and colors (tortoise cat eyes, thick black buddy holly's). What do you think? Can I pull them off? Honestly I kind of regret not buying them. Most likely it was their dramatic thickness (reminiscent of this HONY portrait that I found to be so amazing) that drew me to them, not their practicality (the fit wasn't perfect). I couldn't justify buying a new pair anyhow, when I had just bought some Warby Parker's less than 6 month's ago. So I thought I would wait a week and if I can't stop thinking about them still (which is a rule I try to often abide by) I'll go back next weekend and hope they are still there!
