A Trio of Yarn Projects for the Adventurous Craft Enthusiast

by Kristopher Samuels Writer

If you’ve been knitting and crocheting for many years, it can be hard to find the right projects to keep your work fresh and exciting. Since you’ve probably tried to make most of the go-to projects for most yarn craft enthusiasts, like scarves, mittens, and cozies, it makes sense to want to turn things up a notch with a proper challenge.

Luckily, we have a trio of ideas to put your skills to the test. As always, make sure to buy yarn online from a reputable provider so your materials are always top-quality and your projects are always cost-effective. Let’s dive in!

Doily Delight

Crocheting yourself a doily is definitely one of the high-water marks of every craft enthusiast. It calls for a level of precision and detail that usually takes years to acquire, including the ability to work in many different directions using a variety of stitches and colours.

Do a little research and find a free crochet pattern online you’re eager to try. You can go as intricate as you want and even plan ahead in terms of exactly where you want your doily to go. Perhaps on the dinner table for a nice splash of colour, or in a frame on the wall to spark conversation during get-togethers.

Make sure to brush up on your picots and double crochet clusters before getting started so you don’t have to interrupt your workflow.

The Sweetest of Throws

If you need a touch of sweetness in your life, why not fashion yourself a throw in worsted weight yarn with a classic red and white peppermint motif? Its vibrant appearance is sure to wow anyone who walks into the room and put them in a cheerful mood.

You’ll be using the interlocking crochet technique to form the delicious candy shapes, so take your time and get comfortable with it before diving in. The technique simply calls for an evenly spaced motif by working your current round in front of the previous one without getting into the stitches.

Listen to the Pillow Talk

Is there a mantra you use to motivate yourself throughout the day, or a message about your outlook on life you enjoy sharing with others? If so, it may be time to give embroidery a try and add appliqué designs to your pillows in the form of unforgettable quotes!

All you’ll need is an embroidery sewing machine, appliqué fabric, a piece of fusible web, and a computer to print your words in the size and font of your choosing. Simply back your appliqué fabric with fusible web and place your printout on top. You can then stitch the outline of each letter using straight stitches, remove any excess fabric, and fuse them in place. To finish things off, use zigzag stitches to appliqué the quote to the pillow’s background fabric.

You should feel free to customize these projects to your particular style or to whoever should be so lucky to receive them as gifts. Your favourite yarn store will be able to help you with anything you need.

The great thing about the wide world of yarn is that there’s room for everyone’s creativity, regardless of background or experience. Be willing to challenge yourself with new techniques and you’ll soon discover that you’re capable of much more than you give yourself credit for.
