A Step Forward Towards Better Viewing- Cable TV Digitization
by Abhjeet Kumar Seo ConsultantCable Television market is one of the fastest
growing markets in the country today and Government of India is making various
efforts in order to improve the quality of cable television in India. For the
same reason, government has passed an ordinance in the parliament for the
digitization of cable television services in the county. According to this
amendment made in the section 9 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation)
Amendment Ordinance, 1995, the I&B ministry will make Digital Addressable
System mandatory. This will help to improve the quality and standard of cable
television services in the country.
According to the amendment, a subscriber of cable television will have to
install a digital TV set top box
or a cable set top box in order to
obtain digital signals for cable television. The cable TV set top box will
process the signals and improve their quality and the viewer will have a better
viewing experience. Set top box will be provided to a subscriber by the cable
tv operators in their own regions. Digitization will take places in various
phases depending upon the population of the city and availability of digital TV set top box or a cable set
top box. The process of digitization will be carried out in a stipulated time
frame and subscribers who fail to install a set top box in that time frame will
not be able to receive cable TV signals until they install a set top box.
Advantages of digitization-
Digitization of cable tv services in the country will bring about the much
required change in the quality and standard of cable TV signals. The quality of
normal cable TV signals in India is very poor at the moment and there are
various types of interference from time to time. The operators fail to provide
signals in case of heavy rainfall or bad weather. However, with the
digitization, the problem has been solved. The quality of cable signals is also
improved to a great extent, and most no time lag during live broadcast and the
viewer will get to experience the colors in true HD view. Apart from the
improvement in the quality of signals, there is hardly any interference in the
broadcast during rainfall or bad weather. The only thing that is required is a digital
TV set top box against cable set top box.
Phases of Digitization-
Digitization of cable signals will be carried out in four phases, in 3-year
duration, starting from 31 October 2012, and ending on 31 March 2015. The four
metros cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai have to shift to digital
addressability by 31 October 2012. The second phase will include 38 cities in
15 states of the country, such as Lucknow, Patna, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Pune and
Bangalore by 31 March 2013. All urban areas are expected to digitize by 30
November 2014 and the remaining areas by 31 March 2015.
