Costume Jewelry is a replica of Fine and expensive Jewelry. It is created to endow the wearer with the beauty of the original piece without the burden of the price of the original. It has existed among us since a long time and is still very famous.

History

Costume jewellery came into existence in the 1930s as a cheap and disposable alternative to precious or fine jewelry. It was supposed to be worn with specific outfits for certain occasions but was not supposed to be passed down the generations. It was meant to be purchased for only a short period of time. It was supposed to outdate itself and later be purchased in favor of more trendy costume jewellery.

Costume Jewelry became extremely popular during the Golden Era. During this time glass was used extensively in the production of this kind of jewellery. With the dawn of industrial revolution costume jewellery began to be made with machines and this further aided its distribution and helped satisfy the increasing demand.

Today, just like old days, we have fine, semi-precious and of course costume jewelry. It is used to add a finishing touch to any look. Costume jewelry styles of the years gone by are now becoming popular again and are consequently being reproduced.

Difference between Costume Jewellery and Fashion Jewellery

Both Fashion jewelry and costume jewellery revolve around the idea of providing some kind of replica for expensive, fine jewelry. The metals and stones used in the production of both kinds of jewelry are semi-precious and tend to be plated metals or glass. Rhinestones, blown glass and rougher earth based stones tend to be common components of both kinds of jewelry.

What differentiates these two is the purpose of their creation.

Costume jewellery was created for the purpose of replacement of finer pieces of jewelry that could not be worn on an everyday bases. It was produced to be worn every day without fear of it being damaged or lost. This kind of jewelry can be easily acquired without the fear of burning a hole in the pocket. It acquired its name due to its used in the theatre where accessories were required to be visible to the audience and original jewelry couldn’t be used for this purpose.

Fashion jewelry was created for making fashion statements. It was created to complement and accentuate the look. It can also be worn everyday however it was produced to be used with different outfits to make them look better by pairing them with this jewelry. It is not as timeless as costume jewelry.
