A Requirement of Base Layers in Hunting

by Steve Austin Content Writer

Base layers are one of the most fundamental in hunting and most fundamentally misunderstood when hunters prepare for hunting gear, especially the base layers. There are a lot of brands to sift through when it comes to choosing the right under layer for insulation for your hunting trips.

It is important that hunters layer according to the activity level and the ambient temperature of the location they are heading onto.

Why is it Important to Layer Correctly?

Hunting gear can vary depending on what hunters decide to hunt, the season, and weather in which the hunt is going to take place. So it is crucial that while going for hunting, start a layering system with a base layer and choose the base as something that is relatively breathable, lightweight, and comfortable.

Many under layer t-shirts are designed to be moisture-wicking, as well as quick-drying to offer some form of environmental discomfort reduction while on the trek or hunt. While hunters are out in the field most of the time, choosing a good base layer and layering correctly will allow their body to maintain the appropriate temperature and they will be able to focus on the surroundings properly.

Though picking out a good base layer for hunting involves a bit more thought than one might expect including, checking the material, reviews, and so on. That being said, it is overly complex and hunters should make sure to dress in the appropriate gear for different climate types.

What are The Ideal Product Selection and Testing Procedures?

The more you are going to use your hunting gear, the more important it is to invest in the right gear and clothing from the outset. Quality should be the key factor. There are some essential factors that make a good product different from the bad one, when testing or trying, including comfort, fabric weight, material, breathability, fit, and if the material is odor resistance. By the time all these factors are checked in a base layer hunters will get a clear idea about the overall quality and performance of the base layer they have selected.

If there is a restricted budget while buying hunting apparel, you are well-advised to spend more on the base and outer layer of clothing and save a little on the intermediate layers.

The fabric: Choose a fabric that has excellent moisture-wicking properties, such as fibers in synthetic fabrics absorb very little moisture and dry very quickly, which is a boon in persistent rain or in humid climates where the gear can take longer to dry. Another thing to take care of while choosing the material is durability, wool can be warmer but the synthetic fabric is more durable than wool.

Choose the Hunting Base Layer Properly to Ensure Safety

An obvious reason for the requirement of base layering properly is to ensure that you stay safe during extreme weather conditions. While on the go, hunters might experience heat stroke or hypothermia. To add to this, safety is only one branch of the base layering benefit tree. Another big factor is to consider comfort. Most hunters shrug this point of comfort when it comes to choosing a base layer, but for most of the hunters, it is important, being comfortable during the hunt and makes it much easier to enjoy.

Another important factor relating to being comfortable is the optimal performance which is something every hunter cares about. With the right gear while hunting and most importantly the right hunting base layers your body is kept appropriately cool or warm and you are much likely to be firing heat or shivering.

The Temperature and Weather Conditions Matter

Though everyone has a different definition of cold, if it feels cold the base layer must be followed by an insulating layer over top. Even in the ultra-cold weather conditions, there will be nothing wrong with using a breathable and lightweight t-shirt as a base layer in conjunction with heavier insulation gear and a cold-weather piece.
