A Quick Guide to Trimming Your Trees

by Kevin Smith Author

Are the trees on your property beautiful and shady areas where you’d like to spend a Saturday with a glass of tea and a good book? If you haven’t had them pruned recently, they probably aren’t. Tree trimming in Edmonton is important for several reasons and should not be ignored.

Reasons to Trim Your Trees

There are three basic reasons to trim the trees on your property: their health, the aesthetics of your lawn and the safety of your property. Making sure that your trees are free of dead branches and debris ensures they don't become infected with insects or other pests as well as protects people, vehicles and other property from becoming victim to a falling branch. Finally, trimming ensures your trees look beautiful and inviting on your property.

Basic Tips and Tricks

If you decide to perform tree trimming in Edmonton, it's best to do it during the winter when your trees are dormant because you'll be able to see more clearly. However, if a safety hazard is present, take care of it immediately regardless of the season. Avoid removing any branches more than five centimeters in diameter unless you need to and only trim areas of the tree that seem to be weak, have narrow angles or are v-shaped. Completed pruning should have a living crown to tree height ratio of about two-thirds.

Common Tree-Trimming Techniques

Several techniques are available for trimming trees. Many people choose to look for the branch collar near the bottom base of the branch and cut outside of its bark ridge in a downward angle. It is important not to injure the branch collar during this process but the method can be used for both living and dead branches. For long stems, use the three-cut technique. This technique involves creating a notch on the stem where it faces away from the branch you want to retain. Next, create a second cut inside the branch's crotch and above its ridge. Finally, make a final cut to remove the stub by cutting parallel through the stem.

Reasons to Hire a Professional

You may be tempted to trim your trees yourself to save a few bucks but hiring a professional company could actually save you money in the long run. If you are inexperienced, you may not know which branches need to be trimmed or understand how to safely use dangerous equipment. Injury to yourself or dead branches falling on vehicles or homes mean big money for repairs and recovery. Hiring a professional company ensures the people working on your trees are licensed, trained and knowledgeable about the safety hazards related to the work. You’ll have a gorgeous lawn with trees that are beautifully pruned, healthy and safe.

When hiring someone to perform tree trimming in Edmonton, always work with a reputable company that is licensed, insured and has excellent reviews from their former customers. Hiring a high-quality business such as Grinders Tree Service helps to ensure you are happy with the completed work and don’t need to spend more money than is necessary on the project.
