Buying a dirt bike can be one of the most exciting things you'll ever experience. However, learning how to maintain them will take a little bit of time. We've summarized the basics of dirt bike maintenance to make it easier for you to enjoy owning one of them.

Update the Spark Plugs

Every engine uses spark plugs to ignite the bike's fuel once it enters the combustion chamber. The only engines that don't use them are the ones fueled by diesel. Updating your bike's spark plugs can prevent its engine from misfiring if the old ones are worn out. The best thing about replacing your dirt bike spark plugs is how cheap everything is. It's one of the most affordable you'll ever do whenever you're maintaining the bike. Plus, it can prolong the engine's lifespan by making sure it never misfires. That's going to reduce how much maintenance you will have two do in the future.

Install a New Carburetor

You will want to buy high-quality dirt bike parts that catch your eyes when you're shopping for them. You should always look for one that enhances your performance after it's installed. The stock model on most bikes doesn't provide a wide enough opening for all its fuel to get saturated. Adding a new one would let you widen its intake, so more oxygen enters the combustion chamber. That's how you're able to add a little bit more power to your bike's engine without a ton of work. Make sure whichever one you're installing has a wider tubing than what's already on the bike. That's the only way you'll actually increase the bike's power output.

Use a High-Flow Filter

Another way you can improve its oxygen concentration is by installing a new filter. Most of what they put in when you first get a bike won't breath well. The most common stock filters use a type of cotton that only lasts for a few months. You can replace whatever they've installed in your bike with a high-flow filter. Doing that would improve the bike's flow rate, increasing oxygen concentration, too. A ton of high-flow filters also let you reuse them after they've been in the engine a while. Just brush them out and make sure any debris falls away. You can even use a pressure washer to spray them with pressurized water, so nothing sticks around.

Replace the Bike's Chain

Your bike's chain has to endure incredible forces while you're driving it anywhere. It's hard to say how much stress they've gone through if you've bought a used bike. However, you can understand why it's a good idea to get a new one if you've never driven the bike. You wouldn't want it to snap after you're a few miles away from the house and not near a gas station. A new chain isn't going to cost you more than any other project. But, it'll provide way more protection and peace of mind. Installing one of them doesn't even take long if you have access to the internet. Nearly every bike has a video showing you how to install a new chain somewhere online.

Add a Wider Set of Wheels

Most dirt bikes come with a decent set of wheels, even if they're stock. Upgrading your bike's wheels isn't a bad idea, though. You should always maintain them to prevent anything from snapping next time on the track. Use good lubricant to reduce any friction occurring where the tire and chains meet. You should also buy something to refill the tire's once they've lost a little pressure. Riding on underinflated ones is a bad idea, even for experienced riders. You can really make them go fast if you go around the track a few times while they're underinflated.

Maintaining a Dirt Bike at Home

We'd recommend going to the hardware store and picking up a tool set that has all the basics. You'll need everything that's in one of those sets by the time you're done maintaining a bike. You won't need everything all at once. But, it's worth getting everything at the same time anyway.
