by Piccadily India Consultant
“Too much of anything is bad, but too much of Whiskey is barely enough” said Mark Twain once. Indians strongly believe in his quote is what Alcohol market prove. Statistics say, Almost 45-50% of Whiskey produced in world is consumed in India be it a blended or single malt. Introduced by British in 19th century and holding a cap of highest consumer, India started producing its own whiskey very recently.

Types of Whiskey:
There are majorly two types of whiskey, one is Single Malt and other is blended. Single malt is nothing but produced from single malting of Barley whereas in ‘blended’ two or more mixtures of malts are combined and thus formed to have a special taste. But predominantly, worldwide, single malt are given utmost importance and value over blended due to its purity and years of maturity. One can always see the as the number of years mentioned in the wrapper increases, price also increases.

Other major difference between the Single malt and blended are its predictability. Even under the same label Single malt are different in each bottle. But blends are perfectly balanced and consistent in nature and serve the purpose with standout flavors.

Types of Blended malt whiskeys
Blended malt whiskeys are of various types such as Tennessee, scotches and Bourbons. And further classified as  “Blended scotch” – different whiskeys sourced from different distilleries and mixed; “Blended grain scotch”-  combination of whiskeys made in single grain but separate distilleries and “Blended Malt scotch”- fusion of single malt made from different distilleries.

Whiskey manufacturers in India
Due to the tropical climate, many of us think India is not a suitable country for producing world class whiskey, but to mention, things are changing now. Renowned manufacturers like Picaddily group started coming out with Indian Malt matured in American Oak Casks and European barrels for number of years.

Indian Malt initially had no bench marks, yet some brands made a history in the industry and still selling more than 20 million cases per year. blended malt whisky in India are usually grain-based whisky blended with Scotch malts, Indian malt whisky and neutral grain spirits.

Whiskey brands:
There are lot of vibrant brands from India made a significant mark globally and claiming various awards and accolades in International Arena. Brands such as “Imperial Blue”, “Royal Stag” and “Blenders Pride” are some of the leading brands during 90’s and now “Whistler” and “Golden Wings” are creating noise in the Whiskey market. To mention especially Bangalore made “AMRUT” and Goa’s “Paul John” are becoming pride of the country in competing strong foreign brands.
