A Guide For The First Trimester Of Pregnancy

by Phoebe Warts Sonographers
Sometimes you might not look pregnant but you can feel it. This is because a number of pregnancy hormones are prepping your body to play as a baby hostess for the next nine months. This phase might be very discomforting for you but these temporary discomforts are part of the incredible process that is taking place inside your womb. In this blog, a well-known fetal health scan clinic in Reading will guide you through the first trimester of your pregnancy.

How long is the first trimester?

The first trimester lasts up to week 13 of pregnancy.  Calculate your due date and you will be able to find at what week you are standing right now. However, your due date might change. So, it’s always better to go with the flow.

Baby’s growth during the first trimester

During the first trimester of your pregnancy, your baby changes from a single zygote, which is from a single cell to the embryo that implants itself in your uterine wall. It is a peach-sized bundle of growing limbs and body systems. The baby starts moving and the organs start taking their respective shapes.

Here are a few things that your baby will develop during the first trimester:

    • Baby’s bones:  The baby starts to sprout arms, legs, hands, feet, and fingers by about week 6.
    • Hair and nails: The skin begins to form between weeks 5 and 8, with hair follicles. Nail beds start to form around week 11.
    • Digestive system:  The baby’s intestines will begin to form by about 8 weeks. Your baby will also form two kidneys by this time.
    • Sense of touch: By the 8th week, your baby will grow touch receptors on his face. By week 12, he will have receptors on his genitals, palms, and the soles of his feet.
    • Eyesight: From the 4th week, optic nerves and senses begin to form. The retina begins to form around week 8.
    • Heart: The tube that will become your baby’s heart begins to beat spontaneously when you are at the 5th week of your pregnancy. Around week 9 or 10 weeks, the heart will become stronger and you will be able to hear it if you sit at a quiet place.
    • Brain:  Your baby’s brain growth will start from the 8th week.
    • Sense of taste: The baby will develop taste buds that connect to his brain by about week 8.

Changes in your body

Here are the most common early symptoms of pregnancy you may experience:
    • Morning sickness: Do not go by the name because this sickness does not just strike in the morning. It starts up by about week 6 of pregnancy. Ginger tea and small but frequent meals can help in this regard. If it’s severe, talk to your doctor and go for fetal health scans in Reading as suggested by your doctor to know the health condition of your baby.
    • Tender breasts: About 6 weeks, your breasts will become tender, tingly, and big which will let you wonder where your old boobs went.
    • Mood swings: Your mood might go up and down frequently by the 7th week. If you have a history of depression, talk to your doctor and take suggestions from him.
    • Weight gain: You are supposed to gain weight during this period as there is a baby growing inside you. Also, due to several hormonal changes, you might gain weight. If you’re suffering from appetite loss, you might even lose weight during this time. Focus on eating frequent light meals of any high-density nutritious foods.

So, these were some of the very common symptoms that can be seen during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, if you face any serious issues then it is always suggested to visit your doctor and take his advice.
