There's a long-standing myth people believed about acne and adulthood. If you were a teenager who struggled with acne, there was an understanding that once you reached adulthood, the acne would disappear. With well over 50 million American adults still dealing with acne each year, it's clear that there's more to acne than teenage hormones. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways you can prevent acne from manifesting on your face. Consider the following tips.

1. Double-Cleanse Your Skin

If you wear makeup, it's a wise idea to use a cleansing balm to loosen the makeup. This process also allows you to keep as much moisture in your skin as possible. Once you've used a cleansing balm, use your cleansing wash. Use a cleansing wash that contains ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxides as they're perfect ingredients for attacking acne-prone skin. Consider using a silicone face-cleansing brush to make sure you're removing all of the dirt from your skin.

2. Use a Deep Cleansing Mask Weekly

Acne-prone skin is typically oily as well. A deep-cleansing mask will help to draw out any impurities underneath the surface of the skin. When you're looking for a good mask, look for ingredients such as bentonite clay. Mix in some apple cider vinegar for a powerful tonic. Use this mask twice a week for the best results.

3. Moisturize the Skin

One of the reasons why people experience acneic skin is because they don't apply enough moisture. When you have oily skin, don't make the assumption that you don't need to apply a moisturizer. In fact, if you don't apply a moisturizer, your skin will simply produce more oil. Excess oil can lead to clogged pores. Clogged pores can easily turn into blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. If you have a pimple that's ready to burst, use an anti acne cream as one of your lines of defense to heal once you've removed the pus.

4. Use Exfoliating Treatments Weekly

Exfoliating treatments help to slough off the dead skin cells. If dead skin cells remain on the skin's surface, this can also lead to clogged pores, dull skin and breakouts. You can use an exfoliating treatment in the form of a liquid serum. There are serums that contain ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids and glycolic acid. Those stronger serums only need to be used once or twice a week. Exfoliating serums fall under the category of chemical exfoliating options. Other options include chemical peels that you can get at a medspa. Physical exfoliating treatments include grainy scrubs. Try your best to get scrubs that are made of tiny granules. While salt scrubs and sugar scrubs work well for the skin on your body, they can easily tear up the skin on your face. Instead, look for facial scrubs that contain ingredients like fruit enzymes and turmeric. As you use exfoliating treatments on a consistent basis, you'll experience brightness and clarity in your skin.

5. Drink Lots of Water

Water flushes the system of toxins. If you're not already drinking enough water, work your way up to drinking half of your body weight in ounces. Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It requires water in order to look clear, clean and supple. If you need to set a timer on your phone, do it in order to remind yourself to drink. As you drink, you'll also feel a difference in the way you feel.

6. Avoid Inflammatory Foods

More studies continue to emerge that point to inflammation as a major reason for acne. If you consume inflammatory foods like dairy, you'll experience more acne breakouts. Try your best to stick to an anti-inflammatory diet that includes lots of fruits, vegetables and lean meats. Look for dairy alternatives that won't cause breakouts. Just as cows get pumped up with hormones in order to produce, humans are consuming those hormones when they drink cow's milk or eat the byproducts like cheese. Instead, look for organic, non-dairy alternatives as they will protect and preserve the beauty of your skin.

Conclusion

In addition to these tips, always remember that a healthy lifestyle makes a major difference in your skin. Give your skin some time to adjust to new products and new routines. In order to see results, you need to remain consistent for at least one or two months. As your pimples become less frequent, remain consistent with your routine. Preventative care is the best approach.
