Help your kids to make wise career decisions! Doing the work you love makes life much more fulfilling. When it comes to choosing a career, kids find it difficult without proper guidance. All sorts of advice keep coming in like choosing a safe prestigious career, a career that will give you the most money and more. Hence, it’s highly essential that parents guide and encourage their children in their quest to find and do work they love.

Here are 8 ways parents can support kids in choosing the right career. An insight from St. Georges’s College, one of the top boarding Schools in India

  • Find methods to discover career interests
Help your child learn about what career they enjoy the most! Ask them a range of career-related questions like what they would like to become or which career they would choose.

  • Expose your child to a variety of activities
Let your child try out new opportunities and see what arouses their interest. You can try nature, arts, science, museums, animals, travel, people and check out what interests them most. Encourage them to learn more about that topic.

  • Familiarise your child with the job marketplace
Encourage kids to get information on career options from as many different sources as possible. This will help your child enter career planning in a more reality-based and informed way.

  • Help find a mentor for your child
Having a great mentor can fuel your child’s career ambitions! Seek a positive, encouraging role model for your child if your child shows strong interest in a certain career path.

  • Do not treat your child as an extension of you
Your child is a unique person! Certain things that might drive you away from a certain job might be the things they love doing. You should avoid telling your child to steer clear of a certain path just because it’s something that doesn’t interest you.

  • Be a role model
You can set a great example of doing work you enjoy! Your child watches your every move, and growing up seeing you build a career you really love is good for them. They’ll know that they can also find and do work they love.

  • Be patient and encouraging
It is often a long process of self-discovery and experimenting to find the work you love. Kids may also change course in their career path but be patient with your child in these difficult decisions, and encourage them to do well in their chosen career.

  • Encourage your child to spend time with good friends
You can challenge your child to get out of their comfort zone and get involved in sports & other activities. The friends your child chooses to hang out with can greatly affect how they think! Having inspiring friends will help them grow into their full potential.
