8 Types of Alloy Wheel Finishes for the Cars

by Herts Wheels Specialists in Alloy Wheel Refurbishment
Today, the car owners have the opportunity to select a custom alloy wheel finish based on the already used finishing method. The gripped elements depend on the wheels’ finish as well as its maintenance.

Thus, the common eight types of finishes implied for custom wheels are -

  • Machined
As aluminium alloy is flexible for working with, so the machined finishes are suitable for alloy wheels. A spinning wheel is used to apply the machined wheel finish on a computerized lathe, which cuts thin layers precisely away from the surface of the wheel. Thus, the wheel gains a metallic and clean circular disk look. After machining, a clear polyurethane is equally applied to seal the aluminium from oxidation. Washing with mild water and soap solution is fine to maintain the maintained finish and the coating.

  • Painted
Spray painting and innovative powder coating whereby the baked colour is directly entailed to the wheels are the two common processes to paint for custom alloy wheel finishes. A vivid top coating is its verified trait for keeping the paint intact for preserving its visual appeal. The varied colours used in the painting are bronze, red, silver, blue, grey, and various black shades. Even the painted alloy wheel finishes are partially machined so these attain creative stylish patterns. Non-acidic cleaners are a must to prevent topcoat damage. Thus, the mild water and soap solution is best to keep it clean.

  • Polished
The aluminium surface of the wheel gets a dazzling shine through buffing and smoothening. The wheels do not gain any weight after polishing, so the polished wheels are good for racing. Hence, the classic wheels are polished. Regular buffing and waxing maintain the polished aluminium alloy wheels. Strong metal polishes are the apt ones to clean the polished wheels. Rather, these have to be polished regularly for their appearance.

  • Chrome
Chrome wheels are popular because of their exquisite and bright lustre. The aluminium alloy wheels are coated with equal layers of chromium, nickel, and copper for the wheels to acquire a chrome-plated finish. This protective chrome plating insulates the wheels from corroding; it is even scratch-resistant. Chrome plating finish is durable; the wheel gains more weight apart from the finishes. Exposed to salt, the chrome could corrode. Hence, right after driving from the de-icing roads and repaired if it had encountered any cracks or peels.

  • Charcoal
Charcoal is also gunmetal, which is a dark grey coating finish to the alloy wheels. Despite its name, the coating applied on the wheels is old grey, but it remains glossy and is different from the matte finish.

  • Textured
Textured coats are the insides of the wheel spokes having speckled silver. The texture coating is done along with the curing process that creates a texture in the aluminium alloy.

  • Hyper Silver
The wheels slightly glow when coated with hyper silver, which is a combined form of two layers - first light or dark layer and a silver layer on its top. When the alloy wheels are frequently coated with hyper silver, then the wheels look more bright and light.

  • Standard Silver
Mostly, standard silver is one of the common alloy wheel finish. It makes the metallic wheels appear shiny, clean and rich. The standard alloy wheel with standard silver finish, in fact, raises the car's standard base.

A car wheel could require a finish at any time, and as a car owner, you could want to try something new. Take the professional counsel and bring out the change in the wheel, which you want to see. The eight types of finishes are described above to serve as a guide, so you can easily understand the guidance of the professionals.
