8 Tips for Keeping Visitors on Your Blog or Webpage Longer

by Santana J. Content Writer

Do you want to get visitors to stay on your site longer? Are they leaving within seconds of arriving on the landing page? There could be a number of reasons why they don’t want to stick around for very long. Even if your bounce rate is less than 50%, you can still make improvements to keep it even lower.

The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to keep visitors at your site longer. The longer they stay, the better the chance of them converting.

Here are some things you can do to keep them around:

  1. Make sure your content is well-organized. Sloppy content is difficult to follow, let alone read. Avoid big chunks of unbroken text. Improve readability by adding sub-headings and bulleted lists. Don’t squish the text together, and use a font that is crisp and clear.
  2. Use better images. If you are still using stock photographs, you’re a few years behind. Start using custom images. It might cost more to have custom photos taken, but it will improve the appearance of your site a great deal. Users know cheap photography when they see it, so having cheap images on a website will not only hurt your conversions, it will reflect negatively on your company.
  3. Improve page loading speed. One of the biggest reasons for people to leave a webpage within a few seconds is because it’s not loading properly and they’re afraid that their browsers will crash. Don’t keep your site bogged down with useless content and unnecessary graphics. It doesn’t matter what kind of PC or mobile device visitors are using, or what browser they’re trying to view your site with, the load speed should be fast.
  4. Compare the page(s) with the high bounce rate to pages with lower bounce rates. What do the more successful pages have that the others do not? What do they not have, that the problem pages do? Compare the content, font, design, copy, images, keywords, etc…
  5. Ask thought provoking questions. You might even want to be a bit controversial. This will encourage visitors to leave comments. Any comment is better than none at all. This means that people are actually staying longer and paying attention to your message!
  6. Are you using impressive, effective headlines? Or are the headlines simple and boring? Also, the headline should actually be relevant to the content on the page. Never use misleading page titles. They should be short, concise, and interesting.
  7. Don’t put more information than what is necessary on a landing page. Only use one call-to-action per page. Trying to combine multiple topics and CTAs on a single page will only confuse the visitor. How can you expect them to stick around if they’re not even sure what the page is about?

  1. Consider the layout and the design. The problem may be with the colours or the text. There could be navigation problems for users on smartphones. Does the page look too ordinary, like so many other websites out there? You should have a custom design made just for you. Consider investing in a professional web designer if you haven’t done so yet.
Hopefully, you now have an idea of what you need to do to keep visitors on your website longer!
