8 Hair Color Rumors: True or False?

by Pooja Pawar Birds of paradyes

The internet is flushed with information about hair color, do’s & don'ts, but what to believe is the real deal. Worry not, we're here for you.

Busting hair myths, one at a time.

  1. Demi-permanent and Semi-permanent hair colors are the same:- False!

Demi-permanent colors require a low-volume developer and are used to darken your current hair color. They last for up to 30 washes. Semi-permanent on the other hand are temporary and last up to 8-10 washes. They simply stain your hair to your desired color and then wash out in a few washes, with no developer required.

  1. Sulphate free shampoos are always the best:- False!

While generally sulphate-free shampoos are less harsh and better for your scalp, it actually depends on the individual. Some people actually prefer sulphate shampoos and have better scalp and hair health when they use a sulphate shampoo.

  1. Sulphate shampoos cause hair color to fade faster:- Mixed!

That is somewhat true. Shampoos can have different sulphate compounds. While sodium laureth sulphate(SLS), which is commonly found in a lot of shampoos, can facilitate color fade, other sulphate compounds like cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine help to maintain the shade.

  1. Hair coloring accelerates greying:- False!

Greying of hair is completely genetic and while some other factors can be at play for premature greying, coloring your hair isn’t one of them.

Fading or greying of hair is a common issue in our nation because of the harsh sunlight in most parts of the country.

  1. Semi-permanent dyes damage your hair:- False!

Conditioner based semi-permanent dyes do not damage your hair but in fact, are nourishing and can help fix some of the bleach damage. They simply stain/deposit on your hair and fade with each wash leaving behind the conditioned hair.

  1. Bleaching your hair damages it, somewhat:- true!

While bleaching does dry your hair it is not that difficult to take good care of it and have healthy hair. By incorporating hydrating masks, serums, and conditioners into your hair care routine, your hair will be good as new and softer and shinier.

  1. Maintaing colored hair is difficult, big:- False!

Contrary to popular belief, maintaining colored hair is not at all difficult. By simply switching to a good color care shampoo and conditioner, it makes it super easy even for beginners to take care of their colored locks. You can add hydrating hair masks & serums to your hair regime too.

  1. Hair color doesn’t last long:- False!

While it depends on the color & the formulation used, any kind of dye can last at least up to a few washes and you can extend the life of your color by using color protectant hair products.

Whether you color your hair or not, taking proper measures is the first step to your hair health.
