8 common myths about traffic rules in India

The feeling of Indian traffic or the lack thereof has been the source of many funny social media and cartoon memes. Jokes aside, the sad fact is that India occupies a very high position in road accidents and deaths as a result. The Indian Road Congress even estimates that there is a fatal outcome on our roads every four minutes. In many cases, these accidents could be prevented if the correct rules were followed.

The UN has declared 2011 - 2020 the "Decade of Road Safety Action". We believe that training and compliance with traffic rules are the two most important factors to ensure road safety. Below we provide an overview of some common myths about traffic rules in India and we inform the reader about the correct way to follow them.

Lights at night: At night, when traffic has decreased, traffic police can turn off signals at many intersections, which means you have to be careful but without stopping. But at busy intersections, where traffic lights are operational, it is important to obey them. There may also be partially operational signals with the red or yellow lights flashing. Blinking red means stopping, watching and continuing. Blinking yellow means slowing down, watching and continuing. Nighttime accidents are more common and can be avoided by always complying with these simple rules.

Driving on one-way traffic: it seems that nobody really understands the concept of one-way traffic in India, especially two-wheelers and automatic rickshaws. But a very funny misconception about the one-way street is that it is fine to go the wrong way in a one-way street. In fact, it is absolutely wrong to do this. Reversing the vehicle in the wrong direction on a one-lane street is forbidden for the simple reason that it is important in a one-way street the direction of traffic flow rather than the direction of the vehicle it stands for.

Passing to the right: according to Indian traffic rules, the driver must drive on the left side of the road. This means that the acquisition is only permitted on the right. However, this is not permitted if the driver has first indicated that he wants to turn right. In such a case, the vehicle can take in the rear from the left if there is enough room to do this. It is important to indicate turns at all times and equally important to take into account the directions of other drivers on the road and to take appropriate measures. It is not always good to go to the right.

Parking: parking everywhere and everywhere is the norm in India, provided there is no towing vehicle in sight. However, it is important to remember that certain places are not always parking places, whether there is a Tow Zone sign or not. DO NOT PARK near or at an intersection, on a hiking trail or at the top of the hill, near a pedestrian crossing or traffic light, busy road or on a main road, in front of or in front of another vehicle parked to prevent obstruction to cause, on white roads, near the entrance of the hospital, school or bus stop, next to the traffic light, at the entrance of a building, where it is limited to the park.

Seat belts: wearing a seat belt saves your life. It is a myth that you do not have to wear a seat belt if you only drive a little or only on the inland roads and not on the main roads. The reality is that accidents can happen anywhere and that you should always wear a seat belt if you always drive / drive in the front. Seat belts prevent death in more than 50% of traffic accidents.

Drinking and driving: the legal limit for blood alcohol level (BAC) or blood alcohol level is 0.03% or 30 mg per 100 ml of blood. This means that an adult of average size is well above the consumption limit in his second drink. Many people in India believe that eating food with / after drinking makes them wonderfully sober. It is true that food in the stomach reduces the absorption of alcohol in the blood, but only reduces it by 10-20%, which means that you are likely to have enough trouble driving even after meals. Do not drink or drive, even if you have eaten!

This is a very informative article about safety while driving and traffic rules in India.

But, surprisingly, you can substitute India with Nigeria and this article will be direct on point.

It is our responsibility to care for ourselves and our neighbours by driving according to the rules always and obey all traffic rules.

What a wonderful article.

I hope that the new rules will bring some order to the bad traffic conditions in most Indian metro cities. The stiff penalties will deter unruly drivers and riders from breaking traffic rules and ensure safety on the road for everyone. In the meanwhile, it is your responsibility to keep your documents and vehicles in order. So, don’t give the cops a reason to penalize you and get everything up to speed with the new traffic laws today.
