7 Never Do Things While Living in Australia

by Natasha Manual Digital Marketing Specialist

As an individual immigrating to Australia, you might have already lined up the set of activities to pursue in Australia. Being the sixth largest country in the world, Australia is the perfect amalgam of natural wonders, diverse traditions, cultures, tourist places, amazing wildlife and much more. This diverse mix of features in a country where England fits in six times, you must be curious to know more about the etiquette of the country rather than going for the key attractions of the place in the first place. Here is a guidebook for knowing the things you should abstain from while looking for Australia immigration.

Put another shrimp on the barbie

The expression dates back to early 1984 where Paul Hogan used it in one of the ads run by Australian Tourism Commission for audiences in the United States. There is nothing much Hogan could do rather than shoot up the promotion of Australia, which was a destination relatively unknown in the US. But the phrase went wrong as people in Australia love to call shrimp as prawns. Moreover, prawns happened to be one of the favorite food of people in Australia as well. So from wherever you are hailing to Australia, make sure to use prawns, not shrimps!

Beach Safety Sign Boards

There is no doubt that beaches in Australia are a treat to watch and experience. The clear charming blue waters urge everyone to take a quick dip in it. But these beaches are equally dangerous and beach safety instructions should be strictly followed. Every year several people are injured in beaches due to the negligence of these signboards regarding safety from dangerous aquatic animals. However, the major beach hazard in Australian beaches is rip currents. So be careful with these signboards, not just in beaches but everywhere while immigration to Australia for permanent residency.

No Tippings

Generous tippings is not a custom followed in Australia. The workers in the service industry are generally paid in a fair manner.  The country has the world’s highest minimum fixed wage. The workers are legally entitled to take minimum wage, work 40 hours per week, annual paid leaves, sick leaves etc. This ensures that the workers can afford basic necessities of life without much hustle. They are more likely expected to have sufficient disposable income. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that workers find tipping as a disrespectable act. The custom is not actually necessary in the system created by the authorities.

Never Climb Uluru

Not that there is any substantial reason for not climbing this mountain, but as we speak, 37 tourists have lost their lives climbing Uluru, since the record keeping has begun. There is a huge signboard displayed in the foot of the mountains saying not to climb the mountain. The Anangu traditional owners of Uluru have expressed their sadness over the deaths caused and they don't want their sacred place to be in headlines for such deaths. However, by the end of 2019, in coincidence with the 34th anniversary of the return of Anangu traditional owners.

Know Surfing Etiquette

Your mind might have already made plans to give a try at surfing, which is an iconic sport in Australia. However, if you are a beginner, you must learn and follow the etiquette while catching up the wave with fellow surfers. The person closest to the peak of the wave has the priority to ride it. You must not ride into the territory. Try paddle out the zone and wait for your turn. Hang onto your surfing board and secure your leg rope. Don't try to corner other participants and indulge in fun. Make sure everyone has equal opportunity and fun.

The ‘root’ word

Root might be having several good meanings in your culture. But in Australia, it is an offensive slang meaning ‘have sexual intercourse with’. If you accidentally use the word in other contexts, people will stare or give a puzzled look at you. If you are worse unfortunate enough, then you will take double takes as well. If you say Hi I am Sandy, I root for bears, then you are in the wrong spotlight. Be cautious while intending to wear Root t-shirts from Canada with the cute beaver embedded logo. You may be accustomed to using root for the team, which means cheering for the team. But never use the term in Australia!

Don’t pet Dingos

The Australian Dingos are popular sights and seems like easily tamed. You will find them easily in Northern Territory or Frase Island. But they are not domesticated canines. Dingos are not a serious threat, but they are known for making some serious attacks. So whenever you encounter one, take a click at a safe distance and forget about having a close capture. Even though states of New South Wales and Western Australia allows to make Dingo as a pet, generally they are not kept as companion pets in Australia. Hence, it's better to keep this aspect of the things not to do in Australia.
