7 Must Have Items for Your Vehicle Emergency Kit

by Kevin Smith Author

While all of us should make sure our vehicles are properly maintained, the reality is life happens, and sometimes, we end up stranded. If we’re lucky, being stranded is a minor inconvenience, but in many cases, due to extreme weather, being stranded can be problematic, and in some cases, pose a threat to our well-being. If you have gotten your auto routine maintenance in Decatur, you have greatly reduced the chance you become stranded; but if not, here are 7 things you should always carry in your vehicle for an emergency.

1.       Battery Jumper Cables: While it mostly happens in cold weather, if you use auxiliary power, your vehicle’s battery can drain and not everyone carries jumper cables. Providing cables also will make most vehicle users willing to help you out.

2.       Tool Kit: This should include screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, tire pressure gauge, etc. While it will not be of any help for major repairs, it will let you fix minor issues and if you have a flat tire, make sure your spare is adequately filled to drive on. Do not neglect to have a roll of duct tape in this kit; you never know how that can come in handy.

3.       Water: You should figure on one gallon per day per adult of water. Two gallons of water will be enough for most emergencies. This is especially true if you live in a very hot region.

4.       Food: These should include high calories and protein – trail mix, bars, etc. Anything that will help fight off hunger if you are in a prolonged emergency situation.

5.       Survival Blanket: Even in warmer climates, if you’re wet or in shock, hypothermia can set in. A survival blanket helps warm you up, no matter the circumstances.

6.       First Aid Kit: Changing a tire or tightening a clasp on a hose can lead to cuts and scrapes. A first aid kit to handle everything from bee stings to routine injuries is a must.

7.       Fire Extinguisher: This is self-explanatory and while you may never need one for your vehicle, you never know what you may come across while traveling.

Even if you made sure you got your auto routine maintenance in Decatur, you simply never know when a vehicle emergency can leave you stranded. It’s also fairly common to see other motorists stranded with flat tires or equipment malfunctions. In either case, having a well-stocked vehicle emergency kit can at least make your wait more tolerable, and in extreme conditions, could save your life.
