7 Important Paramedics Terms You Should Know

by Kristen White Blogger

If this is your first time getting a CPR AED certification, you might be overwhelmed with a lot of unfamiliar terms during your training time. So, before you get yourself enrolled in a CPR training, you should familiarize yourself with the most common and important terms that you may hear from paramedics. Knowing these terms could be useful even if you are just a bystander during an emergency situation.

#1 – ALS

ALS stands for Advanced Life Support. This term means the administration of advanced medical procedures during emergency situations. This includes IV infusions, electrocardiogram interpretation, and tracheal intubation. This is different from BLS or Basic Life Support as BLS will only perform basic medical procedures to increase the chances of survival. In ALS, proper medical procedures are already done.

#2 – Anaphylactic Shock

This is defined as the collapsing of the function of the circulatory system, causing a decreased blood pressure from an allergic reaction. It is a very serious condition and in worse cases, it could even lead to death. Most of the time a person can go into an anaphylactic shock when they get an allergic reaction from bee stings, insect bites, food, and even medication.

#3 – CPR

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. You might already be familiar with this term and you most probably have seen it performed on TV or in movies. It is a procedure with an objective to save a life by increasing their chances of survival. CPR involves chest compressions and, in worst cases, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

#4 – Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest is the temporary or the permanent termination of the function of the heart. It could become very fatal and it could lead to death. The best thing to do when a person is under cardiac arrest is to use an AED or an Automatic External Defibrillator as soon as you can get an access to it. Today, most buildings and companies are required to have an AED within reach as part of their first aid measures.

#5 – Collapsed Lung

A collapsed lung can be the result of a severe chest injury that can puncture the lungs. Oftentimes, it could be the result of a car accident. In some cases, a collapsed lung can also be caused by a severe lung disease.

#6 – Triage

Triage means the concept of prioritizing the medical responses to multiple patients according to how severe the injury or condition of the patient is.

#7 – Ventricular Fibrillation

Ventricular fibrillation is defined as the uncontrolled heart muscle spasms. This can result in death when not attended properly and immediately. This can be corrected by using an electric defibrillator by sending electric shock so that the heart can return to its normal rhythm.

There is still a lot of terms that you need to learn when you choose to become a paramedic or you want to get a CPR AED certification. This is why you must focus and be serious during the training period as you will be dealing with a lot of new terms that will be vital to saving a person’s life.
