7 Home Remedies to Remove Rust from Doors

by Jamie Dawson Marketing Manager
Rust is something that appears on the metal things when the iron particles react with the oxygen from the atmosphere which creates an oxidation process! This process corrodes the metal and dissolving it into the chalky reddish-brown substance.

While the best way to prevent it is by keeping metal surfaces dry and away from moisture. Also, you can buy rust removal products that contain toxic chemicals, while they are bad for the environment and dangerous to keep around! But there are many safer solutions that you can try at home! Have a look!

However, you can switch to aluminium instead! Get your aluminium doors from Accent Windows which is one of the biggest aluminium door suppliers in Melbourne

1. Scrub

A good start would be by scrubbing the rusty surface with steel wool or sandpaper, a wire brush. A little elbow grease will go a long way if the metal hasn’t rusted too deeply. But if the rust is gone too deep then it is best to eliminate outer flakes of the rust first before using other methods.

2. White Vinegar

If the rust is more stubborn then try using white vinegar. Vinegar is the most common household product that is acidic enough to dissolve rust. You can soak the rusted door and wipe it onto a surface with an old cloth or just pour it directly over rust spots. And make sure to rinse items thoroughly after the rust has dissolved because the vinegar left on the metal could damage the surface.

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda is great for cleaning lots of household messes, but do you know it is great for rusts too. All you need to do is make a paste of baking soda mixed with water and stick it to the rusty surfaces. Let it sit for a while before scrubbing with a steel wool or a wire brush. You can need to repeat this process 2-3 times.

4. Spuds to the Rust Rescue

This is really a simple one, you just need a potato and cut it into slices. Rub it on the rusty spots. Sprinkle some salt or baking soda onto the potato and then rub it over the rusted spots. The oxalic acid in the potato will help in dissolving the rust.

5. Lemon Juice

Like baking soda, lemon also helps in cleaning many household items. Just sprinkle some coarse salt onto the rust, add lemon juice onto it. Rinse it with a wet cloth. But don’t let it sit for long as it can cause damage. You can also mix lemon juice with little vinegar for an extra-strong solution. It will also leave a fresh and citrus smell.

6. Cola to Remove Trust

You must have seen many videos on the internet where people clean rust and toilets using cola! Insane right? But in reality, cola can easily clean off the rust. Moreover, it can also help in cleaning many household things. This is because these soft drinks contain a high level of phosphoric acid that can be used for rusted nuts and bolts or even corroded battery terminals.

7. Use Oxalic Acid

You can also use concentrated oxalic acid. All you need to do is wash the rusted item with liquid and dry it. Now take 25ml of oxalic acid and mix it with 250ml of warm water. Soak the rust for about 20 minutes or clean down the item with a cloth or brass brush. You can now wash it fully and dry the item when rust removal is finished!

Wrapping up

By using these home remedies, you can easily clean of rust from any metal surfaces. Although, you can even opt for aluminium doors and windows from Accent Windows which is well-known aluminium windows and door manufacturers in Australia.
