7 Boat Storage Tips
by Kevin Smith AuthorWhen summer’s over and the cooler temperatures of fall have come on,
it’s time to pack up the summertime memories with the boat and prepare for
winter. But before you settle on the best boat storage in Metairie, here are a
few maintenance tips before parking the boat for the winter. By completing
these tasks your boat will be ready to fire up next summer, and proper
maintenance will keep your boat in shipshape for years to come.
#1 – Disconnect the
battery. This will prevent the battery from draining. A
dead battery won’t start the motor next summer on the first trip out on the
lake. Simply disconnect the cables from the battery’s positive and negative
stems.
#2 – Fill the gas
tank. A full gas tank will fill up the empty space where condensation could
build up on the metal surface of the tank. This will prevent rust. Also, water
from condensation in the gas will harm the motor. Also add a gasoline
stabilizer to keep the gasoline pure.
#3 – Change the oil. This is
a great time to remember to change the oil. Recycle the drained oil at a local
automotive parts store. Just as with gasoline, water or acids that have mixed
with the oil can cause harm to the engine. Also change the oil filter at this
time.
#4 – Add new coolant. Drain
out the coolant and recycle at a local automotive parts store. Flush the
radiator with clean water. Then add new antifreeze. Just as with cars and
trucks, antifreeze will protect the radiator and engine during cold months.
#5 – Apply fogging
oil. Remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil into the spark plug holes.
Remove the air filter and spray fogging oil down inside the carburetor. This
will protect the motor’s moving parts if the winter gets really cold.
#6 – Seal exhaust
ports. If not sealed, rodents and insects can find a nice dark place to spend
the winter. Closing this off is as easy as applying duct tape over the
openings.
#7 – Wash and wax. This is also a good time to do a deep clean of the
boat’s interior. Besides cleaning, you can also treat leather areas with a
conditioner. Also remove electronics, which don’t do well in cold weather. Wash
the outside of the boat and cover the body with wax. Wax will prevent
corrosion. Also use a boat cover to prevent dirt and moisture from getting
inside your newly cleaned boat.

maintenance tips for proper maintenance to keep your boat shipshape for years to
