6 Reasons Your Kid Needs to Go to Summer Camp

by Kevin Smith Author

Summer camp used to be a rite of passage that exposed children to fun, lots of activities and hopefully, a good bit of excitement. While summer camp was mainly geared towards having fun, in the past 20 years, science summer camps have sprung up. These excursions focus more on educational opportunities and if you are debating sending your child to one, here are some great reasons why you should.

Keep Kids Learning

Yeah, it is fun, mostly, but the purpose of science summer camps or educational camps is to expand the breadth of knowledge of kids and expose them to new things. Because most camps are geared towards exposure to specific scientific scenarios, your kid will get an education in that field that far exceeds any experience they will have in school.

Exposure to New Friends

Just like the summer camps of old, science or educational camps expose your child to other kids they would not normally meet. In most cases, the type of children your child will meet live in different circumstances than your child, which increases their range of experiences and knowledge.

They Become Active

Kids today are not nearly as active as kids even a generation ago. Any type of camp will get them more active than normal in most cases, but they also will learn a lot while being active, which cannot be a bad thing.

Exposure to Nature

Most summer camps will expose your kids to some form of nature, but the entire purpose of science summer camp is to expose your child to science and that means immersing them in nature. Whether they are learning about whales, plants, geology or forest wildlife their exposure to nature will exceed in a week what most kids get in a year.

Development of New Interests

Your kid already is interested in science. At camp, they will be able to channel that interest into specific venues and even develop new interests. They also will have chances to do more traditional “summer camp activities” like boating, archery, crafts, etc., which can also spawn a new interest in something other than their devices or video games.

A Summer Diversion

As much as most kids love summer, even they need a break from the normal routine. Camp for a week or two provides that. Plus, for most parents, camp provides a break as well.

Summer camp is a tradition for most kids. Science summer camps take that tradition and make it educational, without kids realizing it. The benefits are many, not the least is that break for the parents.
