Now that summer is in full swing, so is the urge to just hop in the car and get on the open road to wave our worries goodbye. To do that, however, takes some careful planning and foresight so your potential dream vacation. As much as the movies play up the theme of spontaneous getaways, there really is no such thing. Every trip requires planning of some sort.

What’s more, it’s imperative to start planning now so you’re not caught off-guard later. Whether it be something as simple as an air conditioner repair or maintenance check to make sure your system will properly cool your home while you’re gone, or making a checklist of crucial items to bring along will pay off in the long run, no stone should stay unturned.

In this blog post, we’ll provide a few quick simple tips to ensure your dream vacation goes off as planned – at least, as much as anyone can do so.

1. Begin making plans now

Where are you going? Are you driving or flying? Is the lodging of choice a five-star hotel or rustic throwback? The first step in any trip is deciding where you want to go and the sights you wish to see. There is absolutely room for improvisation and spontaneity once the trip is underway based on you and your family’s interests, but it’s crucial to at least have a starting point.

It may seem basic, but you will be thankful. You should also have a backup plan in case weather or some other cause washes out a planned trip so you’re not left in the lurch in case of unexpected events.

2. Make sure everyone agrees on the plan

There is no way to make everyone happy with every potential destination on a trip – but there is room to work everyone’s wishes into the trip, provided there is enough time. Whether it’s with your family or friends, be sure to take everyone’s interests into account when planning activities. Having happy campers is one of the surefire ways to ensure a trip’s success from the outset.

3. Make a checklist of necessary items – and double check it

For this one, it will vary depending on your party’s potential destination. Sunscreen, glasses, bathing suits, and towels might appear on here for a trip to the beach, or maybe a suit or business casual dress if the destination is a little fancier. But whatever the needs, double check – and maybe triple check – because nothing can turn the start of vacation sour than realizing a key item is a few hours in your rearview mirror.

4. Pack snacks and drinks

This is one that is a necessity no matter the age of the participants. Keeping everyone fed and hydrated is will always keep morale and spirit up, so make sure there are plenty of food and beverage options for your party along the way. You can also pre-scout some potential fine dining options beforehand wherever you’re laying your head that night.

5. Bring entertainment options

As much as we plan, not many vacation spots will have a plethora of things to do 24 hours a day, so another key to making a dream vacation is to sport entertainment for those rainy days or late nights at the hotel. This can be anything from card games to board games to video games for the kids, or a few books to pass the time.
