by Ozzie Collectables Ozzie Collectables
This is not the first time that the popular Manga- Fruits Basket is being turned into an anime. Even after almost 20 years, thanks to the popularity of this anime series, it received another remake in 2019. The story is about the members of the Chinese zodiac who can turn into their spirit animal at their own will. The story plot follows the character’s lives as they learn to handle their respective spirit animals, coexist with each other, and learn to live alongside humans that are not part of the zodiac.

But if you are a true manga fan, you will notice that Fruits Basket’s anime adaptation is pretty different than the manga.

In this article, we will shed light on five things that the anime changed.

Let’s begin!

More comedy

When we speak of its manga version, it more of a nostalgic story that has a lot of emotional drama. Even though the characters are somewhat goofy, the roles they play are with gravitas and dramatic.

Whereas anime takes a more funny turn on the idea of the main characters turning into animals of the Chinese zodiac, the plot has a lighter tone, and is pretty comical!

2. Character designs

Even there is not any significant change in how the characters look in the anime as compared to the manga version, but if you compare the characters side by side, you’ll notice minute differences. For example, Tohru has a different eye color, and her school’s uniform has a different shade of blue. Also, other characters, like Kyo and Yuki, have different hair colors.

3. Does not cover the entire story

As it is with any adaptation of a written piece, The anime version of Fruits Basket only ran for one, 26 episodes a long season, so there was not enough room for more storytelling potential. This forced the story to be narrowed down to focus on only the most essential parts of the story.

4. The end of Tohru and Kyo’s love story

As mentioned above, the anime adaptation of the Fruits Basket does not cover everything that was in the manga. In the manga version, the characters had to deal with more complex relationship issues - one such relationship is between Tohru and Kyo in the story.
However, in the anime adaptation, we see them together but after some nuisance that they have to deal with first.

5. Lastly, the hat!

One crucial moment in the manga that never cuts is the subplot where Tohru is young, and someone gives her a hat. She does not know who gives it to her at that time. Later in the manga, we find out that the hat belongs to none other than Kyo.
