5 Signs Your Child May Need a Podiatrist

by Kevin Smith Author

If you're a parent, nothing is more important than the health of your child. Beyond making sure they don't get sick, and that they eat properly, and have all their vaccinations, you want them to be able to enjoy being as physically active as possible. However, it might not always be clear when they have serious physical problems, especially in regards to their feet. Here are a few signs to look for when determining if they should see a pediatric orthopedic foot specialist in Atlanta.

1. You Child Avoids Running or Standing

Your child should want to play. It's only natural. However, if they suffer from chronic foot pain, it's possible they aren't even aware their pain is something that's unusual. If you notice your child avoiding running and playing with the other kids, it could be an indication there's a real problem with their feet. Also, if you notice a reticence to avoid standing for any length of time, that could also be a sign of foot discomfort.

2. Your Child Complains of Foot Pain

Other times, your child will simply communicate to you that they're in pain. If they complain about some regularity, it could be an indication they suffer from flat fleet or any number of podiatry-related issues. If they have recurring complaints, it's best to have it checked out by a foot specialist.

3. Tired or Sore Legs

There are problems that can result due to foot issues that exist beyond the feet. For instance, if your child complains of sore or tired legs, it could be the result of gait issues occurring because of foot irregularities. If your child suffers from multiple strains or shin splints, those could also be the result of podiatry-related issues that would require an examination by a specialist.

4. Your Child Walks or Stands in an Unusual Fashion

Pay close attention to how your child walks. Even if their feet don't hurt, they could be favoring a foot or a part of a foot. While they may grow out of some of these behaviors, it's possible it could become more pronounced over time. Either way, it's worth getting it checked out in advance.

5. An Injury to Your Child's Leg or Foot

Any sprain, strain, tendonitis, or break should definitely be examined by a podiatrist.

When it comes to leg and foot problems, it's definitely better to have your child's foot inspected by a pediatric orthopedic foot specialist in Atlanta before the problem gets any worse.
